During that period, all mobile subscribers (new and existing) are requested to register their SIM Cards to their respective mobile service providers.
He urged Rwandans to embrace the registration process so as to facilitate the linkage between business people and their clients.
Nsengimana commended RURA, NIDA, Rwanda National Police and other partners like RDB, MYICT with different Telecommunication Companies operating in Rwanda for organizing the SIM registration exercise.
“What I can promise you is that this registration process will increase the security to phone users. I urge Telecom Operators to secure all stored information they’ll receive,” said the Minister.
The Director General of Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA), Maj. Regis Gatarayiha said the SIM Card Registration would decrease mobile phone related crimes across the country.
Rwanda now joins Uganda which recently embarked on a countrywide registration exercise of SIM cards.
The Executive Secretary of the East African Communications Organisation, Hodge Semakula, (EACO) noted that SIM card registration has become a serious global exercise in telecoms, with many other countries on course in the region like Uganda and Tanzania.
The process will be handled through registration Agents hired by Telecom operators.
Mobile subscribers who will not register their SIM card by end of July 2013 will face disconnection of service which will be restored only after their SIM card has been registered.
