This elegant light-filled Queen Anne style home enjoys views of the bay from major rooms and terraces.  Elaborate period detailing throughout provides an elegant ambience for large scale entertaining and comfortable City living indoors and out. The asymmetrical façade contains an eclectic mix of architectural elements–peaked roof with intersecting gables, triangular pediment atop ornamented entablatures, round and angled bays housing small paned sashes and plate glass lowers—which all together presents a home with distinctive character on this lovely tree-lined street.

A biography of the architect, Samuel Newsom (1852-1908), and links to his life and works in the City and bay area are presented at the end pages of the brochure.

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF SAMUEL NEWSOM (1852-1908)

Samuel Newsom was born near Montreal. His parents moved their large family of 8 boys and 4 girls to San Francisco in 1860-61. Of the 8 boys, 4 entered the field of architecture. Following the footsteps of two older brothers, Samuel and younger brother Joseph Cather by 5 years formed the partnership of S. and J.C. Newsom; they designed some of Northern California’s most extravagant Queen Anne houses, the most famous being the Carson Mansion in Eureka.

Samuel or in partnership with Joseph designed public buildings including the city halls of Oakland, Berkeley and Gilroy, the Napa Valley Opera House, and left a great legacy to the City and bay area of Victorian architecture, principally in the Queen Anne style. Several of their homes are listed on the National Register or have City landmark designations.
Samuel’s son Sidney Barker Newsom continued in his father’s footsteps.

(Samuel designed the pair of Queen Anne homes at 2602 and 2604 Pacific Avenue. Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid owned No. 2602 in the l990s. It has been used as a location for a feature film and a television pilot, as well as in catalogs for Pottery Barn and “Design within Reach”.)
