Men?s Golf to Host EY Memorial Starting Monday

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team will host the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational this week at Delaware Country Club.

The three-round event gets underway with 36 holes Monday, beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The final round will be played Tuesday.

Delaware Country Club is a par-70 layout that will play to 6,438 yards. Live scoring throughout the tournament will be available at birdiefire.com.

The tournament is named in honor of former Ball State men's golf coach Earl Yestingsmeier, who passed away in January at age 80. Yestingsmeier spent 36 seasons leading the program, including 31 in a dual role as sports information director and golf coach.

He guided the Cardinals to 107 tournament titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. The team's most avid fan, Yestingsmeier continued to travel to nearly every tournament in which Ball State competed until his passing.

The Cardinals are one of three Mid-American Conference teams in the field this week, along with Ohio and Toledo. The Toledo head coach is Jamie Broce, who played at Ball State under both Yestingsmeier and current head coach Mike Fleck.

The 11-team field also includes Chicago State and Loyola University Chicago plus six programs from Indiana: Bethel College, Franklin, Marian, Saint Francis, Taylor and Vincennes. Additionally, Goshen College will send individuals to compete.

Ball State's lineup will feature Albert Jennings, Derek Kundenreich, Tyler Ostrom, Connor O'Neal, Zach Yinger and Quentyn Carpenter. Teams will have six golfers competing with the top five each round counting toward the team score, as opposed to the usual five-count-four format.

Ball State has hosted the tournament every year since the 1974-75 season (with the exception of one weather cancellation). Previously known as the Ball State Invitational, it was renamed the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational beginning with the 2001-02 season. This is the first year it is known as the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational.

This week's tournament marks the final action of the regular season for the Cardinals. The MAC Championships will be played May 1-3 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
