Authorities found a handgun and ammunition in a man's carry-on luggage Sunday at a Pittsburgh International Airport security checkpoint, the Transportation Security Administration said Monday.

TSA alerted Allegheny County police, which patrols the airport.

County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said the unidentified, 35-year-old man had a valid license to carry the gun and will not face criminal charges.

The man was not allowed to take the .380 caliber gun past security, but he was allowed to fly to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. He faces a civil fine from TSA of up to $11,000 for bringing a weapon to a security checkpoint, the agency said.

TSA has found six weapons in carry-on bags at Pittsburgh International Airport so far this year.

Nationwide, the agency has found about 1,000 firearms this year.
