142. TIMOTHY FERRISS: Someday
Timothy Ferriss is an author, entrepreneur, blogger and television host. He’s best known as the 4-Hour guru who helped pioneer the ‘lifestyle design’ movement. This quote is taken from Ferriss’ first book, The 4-Hour Workweek, which I read when I was in the middle of my career change and helped motivate me to eventually start this website. The book teaches people to rethink the outdated idea of working a 9-5 job and to use today’s technology to find the perfect work/life balance.
Ferriss recently debuted his new TV show, The Tim Ferriss Experiment, where he applies his life-hacking rules to a number of different disciplines.
I was fortunate enough to meet Tim and contribute some illustrations to his latest book, The 4-Hour Chef. Here’s a blog post I wrote about it with some behind-the-scenes sketches.

– Zen Pencils was named one of PCMag’s top 100 websites of 2013!
– Yay, it’s finally the first comic of 2014. It’s taken me longer than I had planned to update the site again, but I’m happy to say my holiday really energised me for the year to come and I’ve already got a couple months worth of ideas for comics that I can’t wait to start drawing. Thanks for your patience.

Cool! Kind of a “Wacky Races” tribute.
OK, so it wasn’t just me who thought “Wacky Races!” Yay! ;^)
Great job, Gavin. Love the quote and you made the point wonderfully visual.
I miss the Wacky Racers! Who was your favorite? Not Dick Dastardly I hope.
Ahahaha – hi Kate 🙂 You visit this site din pala 🙂
Great comic. Love the colours, and it’s just what I needed to read right now. Reminds me of this quote:
“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work” -Stephen King
thank you Gav, this is perfect
At first, in the last frame, I read “someday a disease will take your dreams to the grave with you”… sometimes it does ;/
Pretty inspirational for me. I’ll be sure to come back and re-read this comic later. Thank you :).
I really needed this to hit me.
Thank you!! <3
Hi, BEAUTIFUL post !
I am from Brasil and I have a Project named 20/20 which talks about personal development… Would you authorize me to put your posts and cartoons and posters on my facebook and blog ? I would edit and put portuguese subtitles, and ALWAYS OF COURSE sign it with your website address, your e-mails, facebook address etc etc… You can always track me, my fan page and post to see what i’ve been doing… I am a big big fan ! Thanks in advance
Sorry, I am ashamed… I just saw that you already have portuguese in your MENU…
READY! FIRE! AIM!
Never wait. At the very least it shows your enthusiasm. At the very worst you can be criticized for not understanding. I can live with being accused I don’t understand. I can’t live with being accused that I have no enthusiasm.
Nice quote, I’d agree with a book I was reading today, it contradicts the quote saying that Universe actually conspire for our sucess, giving signals to show us the path, but is our choice to follow then and our efforts to face the obstacles in the way.
This quote was the third time I read something about pursuing dreams this week. Signals maybe…
Brilliant Gav…. I needed this.
its great! Thank you!
I wonder what happened to great cartoons like Wacky Races..all the cartoons I see on TV these days are sad.
Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gravity Falls to name a few. All of them are really great compared to a lot of the other stuff that’s being put on TV, and they easily meet and even exceed the standards that were set by some of the older cartoons.
I really needed this right now. Things might not always line up, but you need to just keep going, rain or shine. Life is not about whether you’re ready for it, but it’s all about how well you face life with the best you’ve got. Sometimes you may be as ready as you can be, but other times you’re standing naked in the front line of the battlefield. Laugh about it, and if you fall, stand up, dust yourself off. Don’t be sad because you fell, but happy that you survived another fall and became a better person. Thanks Gavin
Finally got my Zen Pencils high. Missed it very much. And a great comic again Gav.
Amazing!
Although it kind of creates a feeling of guilt and shame, but i shall release this and turn it into positive feelings as ultimately thats what this quote is about – being positive about whatever you want to do and going for it!
Thanks Gav, great visuals.
Amazing work Gav! Love your comics! Spent the last few weeks looking through the older stuff, for lack of a new one to read. Time well spent! 😉
Looking forward to your next work! 🙂
This is really awesome! I especially love the coloring. Your comics have been an inspiration for me. I have started making comics of my own and I love your drawings. Keep it up!
Brilliant Gav ! The last pic says its all..Most of us have a habit of waiting for the perfect day to make a start, well knowing the fact that it would never come and instead just being used as an excuse.
Success comes to those who realize “The moment is NOW” and start acting right away.
irst thing I remember was askin’ papa, “Why?”, for there were many things I didn’t know
And daddy always smiled; took me by the hand, sayin’, “Someday you’ll understand”
Well, I’m here to tell you now each and ev’ry mother’s son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young, ’cause someday never comes
Just amazing work…
Look forward to each post! 🙂
Wow… Just wow. I waited a lor for so mant things!!
Tim Ferriss is one of the inspiration I have in my life, having read the book 4hour-workweek myself I truly understand this comic. It a comic that ends tragically but passes it lesson anyway, yet another good comic, thanks Gav.
Definitely want this as a poster!
What strikes me as the most sad is the last panel. Instead of celebrating his acheivement at creating an awesome car, the guy is ashamed that he didn’t “win.” That gives two messages in one post–the one from Timothy Ferriss, and a bonus one straight from Gavin’s subconscious–celebrate what you have acheived, even if you didn’t acheive one hundred percent of your goals.
And I believe that the second message is as important as the first. So often we’re down on ourselves because of what we didn’t do that we forget that we’ve done some pretty awesome stuff in our lives!
I noticed this sub-message as well. It’s tempting to gauge all of your achievements by how closely you finish against others on an imaginary line. But in truth, since your path forward will never exactly match the direction or timing of anyone else, it’s self-destructive to try and race them to the finish. Nobody is finishing in the same place.
Love 4HWW – Timothy Ferriss is an inspiration. And I’m a fan of yours too, my friend, these strips are awesome and a delight to share. I’m absolutely convinced you work more than 4 hours a week to share this creative light with us. 🙂
Another awesome one. Love the various character and car designs.
Beautifully illustrated. Cheers!
Happy 2 year anniversary to the comic. As a first time reader, I am glad I discovered this site in time to notice this
Oh wait, it’s not quite one year, but I guess this is a sign that I have only currently backtracked to the 100th comic (which states exactly one year ago that it was your 1 year anniversary).
My mistake, and I still think this comic is a great work of art that I will finish someday
Worth waiting for..
Colours!!!!! so many Pretty Colours :p
Great one Gav
Great stuff, Gav.
I disagree with the genre of books commenter Victor refers to – the “law of attraction” books that tout you just have to “ask the universe” for something, a lot, and it will happen. Most books like that, The Secret most notoriously, seem to ignore all the work that must follow “asking” before a goal is realized.
But who cares, right? Just want to sell a few thousand more copies.
Thanks everyone – glad you liked the Wacky Races/Hanna-Barbera cartoon style 🙂
Suck my balls
The Best…!!! 🙂 🙂
We missed you Gav! Beautiful representation of yet another key human behavior
You’re back!!!! *does happy dance*

Brilliant cartoon and the quotes hit my head so hard! Thank you for bringing this to us, gavin.
I have not checked the comic in a while and it’s pretty cool that it updated on my birthday.
My college life has gone to hell nowadays and I think I really felt like I need this comic. Thank you for your hardwork on these comics and I hope the best for you.
thanks for give me a push with this, finally i’ve done it… 🙂
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

sorry gav, i’m not on facebook, but you had to see this.

I love how all their car are drive-able, at the start, and as they cross the finish line, they’e all beat to shit. Beautifully done. 🙂

I do not think you got this quote not meaning to be mean but isn’t is about saying stuff like “I will quit my job SOMEDAY”or “I will audition SOMEDAY” it’s just today is not perfect
Do it now or you’ll be late! Very interesting cartoon
That last sentence hit me like a truck

Nice! thank you so much! Thank you for sharing. Your blog posts are more interesting and impressive.
I respect this article for the all around looked into substance and magnificent wording. I got so included in this material that I couldn’t quit perusing. I am awed with your work and expertise. Much thanks to you to such an extent.
It’s actually sad that a lot of people live their lives hoping someday when the time is right. What’s funny is that, our initial interests back when we were kids never really change. I always wanted to meddle with technology and still have a keen interest in technology.
While parents should encourage their kids’ interest from a very young age and help them express their interests, sadly they don’t :/
Thank you Gavin for your “TIMOTHY FERRISS: Someday” comic post

Are you really curious about that?
