Contenders Not Lining Up For Martin Brodeur's Services

It's been a couple months since Martin Brodeur dipped his toes into the free agent waters, and he still remains unsigned.

Though there have been some nibbles, most teams are set in goal, and aren't exactly lining up to sign a 42-year-old goaltender on the decline.

The experience he'd bring and his puck handling ability would be nice assets to a team, but he can no longer put together a solid string of starts like he once could, and he's declined quite a bit in recent years.

Brodeur has posted a sub .910SV% (below league average) in four consecutive seasons, and has stopped pucks at a .901 clip over the last two.

I'm guessing Brodeur was banking on his name and past accomplishments to give him the opportunity to handpick his next gig, but it doesn't seem to be working out that way.

Via USAToday: "The longtime New Jersey Devils goalie told the Montreal Journal that teams have reached out to him, but he doesn't consider any of them "interesting" enough to join.

Brodeur would welcome an offer to play in Montreal, his birthplace, but said he has not been contacted by the Canadiens."

It's not surprising that Montreal, nor any real contender have shown considerable interest. At this point essentially every team in the league has their goaltending tandem set, and a figment of the Brodeur he used to be won't be of help to many teams.

I don't think Brodeur is going to retire, but he may have to wait for someone to falter or a team to be hit with injuries between the crease before he gets a chance.
