Is Cheerleading a Sport? AMA Says Yes, Demands Safety Measures

The American Medical Association has recommended that due to the rigorous nature of cheerleading and the risks involved, the activity should be considered a sport. 

"These girls are flipping 10, 20 feet in the air," said Samantha Rosman, a pediatrician in the Boston area, told USA Today. "We need to stand up for what is right for our patients and demand they get the same protection as their football colleagues." 

The AMA's decision supports safety measures including better performance surfaces and rules for properly performing stunts.
