NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Conde Nast Entertainment‘s Wired launched the new series Obsessed: Star Trek Continues. The show goes behind the scenes of Star Trek Continues that brings the 1960’s Star Trekkers back to life, and is produced by Vic Mignogna (the original "Captain Kirk"). The Daytime Emmy Awards couldn’t find a TV home, but they found a host. Comedian Kathy Griffin will emcee the shindig, to be live-streamed from the Beverly Hilton ballroom Sunday, June 22. "I can only hope that at the end of the evening, critics and fans alike will compare it to the experience they once had watching Neil Armstrong take man’s first step on the moon," said Griffin.

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix announced a new original series based on the award-winning children books Dinotrux to premiere in spring 2015. The three-season series will follow hybrid dinosaur-construction characters who are set to build and battle. DreamWorks Animation debuted original Turbo FAST last year on the streaming service, and will bring King Julien, Puss in Boots and Veggie Tales in the House this year along with DreamWorks Dragons in 2015.

 

CONTENT MEDIA

Mary Steenburgen is joining the incarcerated ladies of Orange is the New Black. She most recently appeared in the TV series Justified and Wilfred. Steenburgen made the announcement through Twitter on Friday, asking "will I be in orange or black?" The third season of the Netflix show is currently in production.

Univision Digital had its most trafficked day ever during the World Cup games on Friday, with 7.9 million site visits and 7.3 million video views including live streams. The day was a 35 percent lift from Thursday’s opening match between Brazil and Croatia, with 5.8 million site hits and 4.7 million video views. The Mexico vs. Cameroon game on June 13 was the most viewed live stream for the site, hitting 2.8 million views (the opening ceremony and the first match hit a combined 1.9 million views). The Univision Deportes app ranked among the top ten free sports apps on Google Play and the iTunes app store…

To celebrate Father’s Day, Hallmark.com‘s original content arm Spiritclips released its latest video, Superhero. The six-minute film follows a young father and firefighter battling a fire away from his family. Spiritclips is a subscription service that brings Hallmark Hall of Fame movies and select film classics to devices like tablets, smartphone and Roku players.

VH1‘s 24-hour live-streamed Make a Band Famous contest received half a million votes from fans across social media, and named pop-punk band Fancy Reagan the champ. After beating 23 other acts, Fancy Reagen will perform a live showcase in New York City through VH1‘s multiplatform VH1 You Oughta Know program and sign with a record label.

The spat between Netflix and Verizon got nasty enough to draw the attention of the FCC. After messages posted on Netflix blamed Verizon for slow loading times and the telecom company responded with a cease and desist letter, the FCC’s chairman, Tom Wheeler – noting he’s experience poor service himself – wrote in a memo on Friday that he had "directed the Commission staff to obtain the information we need to know what is going on… in order understand whether consumers are being harmed."

ADVERTISING

YouTube‘s two-month old ad campaign will next feature Epic Rap Battles of History and Vice. The first part of the offering included TV, web and display spots with the site’s three biggest stars, Michelle Phan, Bethany Mota and Rosanna Pansino. Both of the brands are in the Google Preferred ad program, which isolates the top five percent of YT channels for advertisers to buy advance inventory.

Hulu sold sole sponsorship rights to Hyundai for new unscripted series The High Road, hosted by restaurateur Mario Batali. The show will be presented by Hyundai, supporting its new Genesis model – but the car company’s not just going after kids. "I don’t think digital is a youth play anymore," Hyundai’s director of marketing David Matathia told Adweek. "Those platforms are more and more common."

AD PLATFORMS

The Exchange Lab partnered with MediaMath to integrate the TerminalOne Marketing Operating System with the tech platform Datalab. "Our integration with The Exchange Lab will help enable marketers to plug in and utilize their own proprietary data from the get-go," Media Math MD EMEA Dave Reed said.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Twitter revealed the numbers for the first World Cup match last week between Brazil vs. Croatia, bringing in a whopping 12.2 million tweets in the 90 minutes. The most mentioned player was Brazil’s @NeymarJr, gaining more than 165,000 followers after he scored two goals for the team. 

NBC News-owned Breaking News launched a new feature to its iOS app that pushes "lightning fast," proximity-based news alerts. "Our mission is to deliver the breaking stories that are uniquely important to you," said Cory Bergman, GM of the startup. "Few things are as important as learning about a big breaking story that just happened near your location."

Tremor Video appointed Nerraj Kochhar as Head of Buy-Side Platforms. Prior to Tremor, he was Managing Director of Programmatic at Magna Global.

Tony Tung joined Cloneless Media as a partner to oversee production and design of the advertising tech firm. He was the former Vice President of Interactive Production at CP+B.

The move to TV-length video by big online companies like Yahoo. The least interesting is probably the importance of tablet viewing, given that computers are still the main medium used.

With a nod to Twitter, describe the current digital environment in 140 characters or less.
The digital advertising environment continues to evolve, but also overstates its hand quite a bit.

What do you see as the biggest obstacles confronting content creators, brands and advertisers?
The saturation of the market. With so many creators making content, there’s really not enough time to watch it all. Also, with the increased costs involved, market saturation may create a survival-of-the-fittest scenario.

What do you think is the biggest disconnect when influencers partner with brands?
When they lose their ability to be objective with their audiences.

What are you hoping to learn from the Cyn Digital Summit?
I want to know more about how online/digital is positioning itself as an alternative to TV, rather than as TV-lite.
