Picayune woman sentenced to 21 months for claiming dead mother's Social Security payments

GULFPORT, Mississippi -- A Picayune woman was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison Thursday for the theft of more than $75,000 in Social Security payments sent to her dead mother.

According to U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis, Virginia Ann Edelman, aka Ginger Edelmen, 49, was also sentenced to three years post-release supervision, ordered to pay $75,325 in restitution to the Social Security Administration and perform 120 hours of community service.

Edelmen was found guilty in May of stealing $75,325 of her deceased mother's Social Security Survivor's Insurance Benefit (SIB) payments. The thefts occurred between May 2000 and October 2011.

The case was investigated by agents of the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General/Office of Investigations. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Jones.
