CofC Volleyball Adds Four Signees To 2014 Class

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball head coach Jason Kepner has announced the addition of four signees to the 2014 signing class, bringing the class to six new players for the fall of 2014.

I am really excited to add these four players to our team this fall,” Kepner said. “We already had a great class with Mackenzie Cooler and Krissy Mummey, but now we probably have one of our best since I have been here. They all bring a lot of talent and will definitely make our team much stronger this fall.”

Olivia Bin comes to CofC from Pasadena, Calif., where she played outside hitter for LaSalle High School. During the 2013 season, she helped LaSalle win a CIF title in Division 1AA in California. She also took her club team, San Gabriel Elite, to a bronze-medal finish at the Junior National Championships in Dallas, Texas. She helped her club team finish four at the SCVA Junior National Qualifier in the 18 Open, the third straight qualification for the open division in the Junior National Championships and first-ever 18 Open qualification.

“Olivia is a strong physical outside that has the ability to play 6 rotations for us this fall,” Kepner said.  “She has played at the highest level all her life and that experience will definitely help her when she arrives in Charleston.”

Looking to follow an extremely successful line of recent Division I transfers to College of Charleston, setter Bailey Humes comes to Charleston after completing her junior year at Syracuse last fall. She played in 82 sets last year and made 144 assists and 48 digs. Before Syracuse, Humes spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons at American River College where she earned first team All-Big 8 honors in 2012. That season, she led her squad with 588 assists, averaging 9.80 per set. Originally from Lincoln, Calif., she captained her high school at Del Oro High and was a first team All-Conference performer in 2010.

“Bailey has a lot of experience from her junior college and Syracuse,” Kepner said. “She is very hard-working and has great location on her sets. She knows how to run a balanced offense and keep all of her hitters involved. She will definitely add depth to our setters this fall.”

Stepping into the Cougars' back row will be defensive specialist Megan Quigley. A native of Wayne, Pa., by way of Archbishop Carroll High School, Quigley brings an All-Conference pedigree to Charleston. She missed her senior year due to injury, but earned Class AAA All-State honors in 2012 and was an All-Delco Valley second team selection. Her high school team was 48-18 during her three years. Quigley played with the Philadelphia Volleyball Academy and was on the 2013 East Coast Power club. She competed in the AAU Championships in Orlando in 2013 and 2014 and was on the 2012 Prep Volleyball Defensive Dandies.

“Megan is a great all around defensive player,” said Kepner. “She is very smooth and efficient with her movement which makes her a very effective defender. Megan will definitely add ball control to our roster.”

CofC will add another South Carolina native to the roster in local product Britney Vallez. An outside hitter from Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Vallez brings a diverse skill set to the Cougar outside hitters. Vallez led Wando to a Lower State Championship in 2013, finishing runner-up in the state title match. She was a SCCAWS 4A All-State performer in 2013 while also earning a spot in the 4A/3A North-South All-Star game. The South Carolina High School Sports Report tabbed her to their All-State team in 2013. She earned All-Region honors in 2012 and was the Max Preps Wando High School Player of the Year.

“Britney is one of the best players in the state of South Carolina,” Kepner said. “I don't think there is a skill that she is not good at. She will provide more defense and passing to our roster, but has the ability to hit outside or take swings out of the back row for us.”
