Each Wednesday throughout the summer, the St. Catherine University athletics department will countdown the top Wildcat performers from the last year in the Wildcat Wednesday Top 10 Performers of 2013-14.,The second half of the summer countdown begins with a first-year student-athlete who made an immediate impact from the get-go for the St. Catherine University track and field team at the first competition of the indoor season. From then on,
Shakeela Wells-Johnson (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) found her name in headlines and the top of results sheets throughout 2014. For her outstanding rookie campaign, Wells-Johnson nabs the No. 5 spot in the 2013-14 top performers countdown.
Wells-Johnson opened up her rookie season for the Wildcats by setting a new school record in the 60-meter dash at the University of St. Thomas Opener. Throughout the indoor season, this was her premier event as she continued to earn recognition for her performances including a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athlete-of-the-Week honor following that performance. At the MIAC Championships, Wells-Johnson highlighted the team's performance with a second-place All-MIAC finish clocking in at 7.80 to break her own record.
Not only did Wells-Johnson shine indoors in the 60-meter, she also helped the Wildcats' 4 x 200-meter relay squad earn All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors with a sixth-place finishing time of 1:50.10 which ranks No. 6 all-time at St. Kate's. The rookie also qualified for conference in the 200-meter dash after setting a new school record of 25.61 at the University of Minnesota Parents' Day Open in February. Wells-Johnson also ran the second-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in school history at 9.41 at the Macalester College Pre-MIAC meet. She finished the indoor season with three first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash.
Following a stellar indoor season, Wells-Johnson continued to help the Wildcats excel outdoors during a tough spring. In the 100-meter dash, Wells-Johnson continued to turn in top times and moved her way up the all-time performances list before finally securing the No. 2 spot all-time with a first-place time of 12.52 at the Macalester Janis Rider Invitational. At the MIAC Championships, the first-year matched her personal record (PR) time to earn a sixth-place finish and honorable mention honors. She also again found herself in the No. 6 spot all-time for a relay as she helped the Wildcat finish sixth
– again earning All-MIAC Honorable Mention
– in the 4 x 100-meter relay at the outdoor conference meet. Wells-Johnson also owns the No. 5 spot all-time at St. Kate's in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.85.
