Top 10 Performers of 2013-14: No. 5, Shakeela Wells-Johnson

Each Wednesday throughout the summer, the St. Catherine University athletics department will countdown the top Wildcat performers from the last year in the Wildcat Wednesday Top 10 Performers of 2013-14.,

The second half of the summer countdown begins with a first-year student-athlete who made an immediate impact from the get-go for the St. Catherine University track and field team at the first competition of the indoor season. From then on, Shakeela Wells-Johnson (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) found her name in headlines and the top of results sheets throughout 2014. For her outstanding rookie campaign, Wells-Johnson nabs the No. 5 spot in the 2013-14 top performers countdown.

Wells-Johnson opened up her rookie season for the Wildcats by setting a new school record in the 60-meter dash at the University of St. Thomas Opener. Throughout the indoor season, this was her premier event as she continued to earn recognition for her performances including a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athlete-of-the-Week honor following that performance. At the MIAC Championships, Wells-Johnson highlighted the team's performance with a second-place All-MIAC finish clocking in at 7.80 to break her own record.

Not only did Wells-Johnson shine indoors in the 60-meter, she also helped the Wildcats' 4 x 200-meter relay squad earn All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors with a sixth-place finishing time of 1:50.10 which ranks No. 6 all-time at St. Kate's. The rookie also qualified for conference in the 200-meter dash after setting a new school record of 25.61 at the University of Minnesota Parents' Day Open in February. Wells-Johnson also ran the second-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in school history at 9.41 at the Macalester College Pre-MIAC meet. She finished the indoor season with three first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash.

Following a stellar indoor season, Wells-Johnson continued to help the Wildcats excel outdoors during a tough spring. In the 100-meter dash, Wells-Johnson continued to turn in top times and moved her way up the all-time performances list before finally securing the No. 2 spot all-time with a first-place time of 12.52 at the Macalester Janis Rider Invitational. At the MIAC Championships, the first-year matched her personal record (PR) time to earn a sixth-place finish and honorable mention honors. She also again found herself in the No. 6 spot all-time for a relay as she helped the Wildcat finish sixth  – again earning All-MIAC Honorable Mention  – in the 4 x 100-meter relay at the outdoor conference meet. Wells-Johnson also owns the No. 5 spot all-time at St. Kate's in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.85.
