Man accused of forging nearly $2K in inmate checks
One check originally issued for $7.29
Albuquerque police are looking for a man who stands accused of forging a check that was given to an inmate released from the Lea County Detention Center.
APD says the man has been identified as 32-year-old Carlos Gomez. A warrant charging Gomez with forgery was filed July 28.
According to the warrant, the Lea County Detention Center informed APD detectives in May that two checks belonging to it had been forged.
Both checks were written to the amount of $984.77, and the Lea County Detention Center advised it did not authorize them.
The warrant continues saying the Lea County Detention Center researched one of the checks and discovered that it had originally been issued to one of their inmates for $7.29 when he was released in May but was forged for a different amount.
One of the forged checks was issued to Gomez, the other was issued to another man, the warrant says.
Detectives were able to interview an assistant manager of a Walgreens where the check issued to Gomez was cashed.
The assistant manager wrote Gomez’s driver’s license and date of birth down when the check was cashed.
He gave that and surveillance footage to detectives, the warrant says.
