GETTING A 'GRIP' ON GRASSLAND DECLINES IN TEXAS
Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
In states like Texas, where 98% of the land is privately held, it can be tricky for a Landscape Conservation Cooperative to assist with biological planning and conservation design.  The trick for the Gulf Coast Prairie LCC, when it comes to grassland and prairie conservation, has been finding the right partners -- partners like the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, the Oaks & Prairies Joint Venture, and the Gulf Coast Joint Venture.

MARCH 2ND WEBINAR: IMPROVED SPATIAL DATA & ADVANCED APPLICATIONS EFFORTS FOR GRASSLANDS IN
THE GULF COAST PRAIRIE
Aransas National Wildlife Refuge - by Robert Nunnally
Knowing what you did is a whole lot easier than knowing what everyone else did.

Partners of the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) and many others are delivering conservation actions, but these collective efforts are largely kept within separate computer systems (e.g. databases). Ben Kahler will give an overview of the past and current GCP LCC efforts in grassland systems.  Specifically, he will provide a short case study of the Oaks & Prairies Joint Venture's use of the Grassland Management Inventory Tool, which could serve as a powerful tool for aggregating and organizing data across organizations and partnerships.

COARSE, FINE, AND CONNECTED: GCP LCC'S LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION DESIGN EXPLAINED
Draft Tallgrass coarse filter design, showing ranked values - Blair Tirpak

“Landscape Conservation Design is a bridge between biological planning and conservation delivery.  We currently lack that bridge; that’s broadly where we are in the Gulf Coast Prairie,” says Ben Kahler, Science Coordinator for the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCP LCC).  “To better focus conservation on the ground, we need to know what our priorities are and focus on achieving our objectives in a way that maximizes our return on investment."   The way that the GCP LCC proposes to do this is through a two-pronged approach, called coarse filter and fine filter, respectively.
