NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
British TV network ITV launched its own multi-channel network in a partnership with YouTube that was initially forged in April. The new digital network will consist of 18 channels and will include web companion series for TV shows such as I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and This Morning. Additionally, Vine star and brit comedian Daniel O’Reilly landed a hosting gig for a new comedy series on ITV, called Dapper Laughs On the Pull. The web star, who has more than half a million followers on Vine, will hit the streets to give single men tips on picking up women.
 
Showtime is launching three companion webisodes for drama Ray Donovan across all digital platforms. “Behind the Fix” will be available on SHO.com, YouTube, iTunes, SHO Sync, Showtime on Demand and Showtime Anytime immediately after the eps’ first airings on August 3 and 17, and September 14.

CONTENT MEDIA

 
Sharknado took over Twitter once again with SyFy’s sequel The Second One when it premiered this past Wednesday. According to Nielsen, 5.5 million people saw at least one of the 581,000 tweets about the latest Sharknado installment, and more than 188,000 unique users sent out related tweets that were seen 67.2 million times. Measurement platform Amobee reports that in the six hours around the airing of the TV movie, brands saw lift as well. Subway saw the most impact, with 17,000 tweets mentioning the chain and the movie during the same period. The American Red Cross counted 270 tweets, and Lenovo was mentioned in 736 associated tweets. Last year’s debut produced 318,232 tweets from 111,604 users in the same period.
 
DreamWorksTV premiered a new video featuring its main ogre Shrek showing off his fairytale freestyle mad rhyming skills. The music video is available on the DreamWorksTV YouTube channel that also features animated big shots Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda.

 
 
MOBILE GAMING + APPS
 

NBCUniversal announced that TV Everywhere apps USA Now and Syfy Now are offered on the Xbox One console. Authenticated pay-TV users will be able to see both networks’ current schedule of shows and recently aired episodes. USA Now’s lineup will feature select episodes from Suits, Graceland, and Covert Affairs along with past seasons of reality series Chrisley Knows Best and Playing House. Full seasons and select eps of current Syfy shows Defiance, Dominion, Being Human and others are available on Syfy Now, as will the latest Sharknado 2: The Second One.
 
Hulu updated its app for Android devices yesterday. New features include a redesigned library, and the ability to download Hulu Plus.
 
British TV streaming service Acorn TV’s app is now available to download for the iPad and iPhone. On Aug. 11, Acorn TV will also exclusively premiere the final three episodes of Agatha Christie’s Poirot’s 25-year run.

Skype’s newest advertising campaign Level 48 is specifically targeting Xbox One users. Digiday reports that the two-day campaign, created with agency Pereira O’Dell, will contain five games and 48 levels of play that will encompass both a comedy and gaming reality show live streamed and hosted by actor Bobby Lee. The program will star CollegeHumor writers Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfield battling on the gaming console to outsmart each other through a slew of challenges. Users will have the ability to add “Team Jake” or “Team Amir” to their Skype contacts and vote online to help or hinder each writer from winning a challenge.

 
 
AD PLATFORMS
 

SpotXchange agreed to sell a majority stake to European entertainment network RTL Group yesterday. “This deal is another example of the broadcast, content and digital worlds converging, but it’s unique in that it’s the first time a major broadcaster has invested in programmatic video advertising,” SpotXchange CEO Mike Shehan said. “Instead of selling the company to a major U.S. technology company, and becoming one feature in a giant ad tech stack, we’ve taken a route that will allow us to operate independently while becoming a core part of RTL’s global business strategy.” RTL Group invested $144 million for a 65 percent stake.

Corey Moss has been named Senior Vice President of Production and Development for Hearst Digital Studios. He was most recently with Principato-Young Entertainment (PYE) where he developed digital video series for Yahoo! HDS launched its first subscription video streaming service CosmoBody.
 
AOL hired Suhaila Suhimi Hobba into the newly created role of Head of Independent Agencies. Hobba joins AOL from Initiative Worldwide.
 
MediaMath appointed Ross McNab as Managing Director, North America and Jake Engwerda as Vice President Sales, North America. McNab was previously the co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer at Kinected (MediaMath’s Australian partner). Engwerda was the head of North America, APAC and Global Accounts sales for myThings.

Netflix’s debuted the trailer for its first adult animated show BoJack Horseman, set to premiere on Aug. 22. The series follows a 90s sitcom star (who is also a horse) that’s looking for a comeback.
