What if Coco Chanel was a Nazi spy? How would you feel about the brand? What would you do with your Chanel merchandise? Would you throw them away?

Since the 2011 release of an unflattering biography of the House of Chanel, the founder reputation has been put in question. In the book entitled “Sleeping with the Enemy, Coco Chanel’s Secret War”, author of the book Hal Vaughan, claims that Mademoiselle Chanel was a spy for the German secret service during the World War II. After having done extensive research, he found her registration number and her code name. She was Agent F-7124 of the Abwehr, under the codename Westminster (referring to one of her lovers). However, we have to admit that Coco renowned class would fit perfectly in a big Hollywood spy film such as James Bond. Obviously, with the release of the book, the House of Chanel denies any anti-semistism sentiments from the famous designer in official press releases.

Intitulée « Dans le lit de l’ennemi, Coco Chanel sous l’Occupation », Hal Vaughan, l’auteur, évoque que Mlle Chanel a bien été une espionne pour les services secrets allemands lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ayant fait des recherches poussées, croyez-le ou non, il a trouvé son numéro de matricule et son nom de code! Nous vous présentons l’agente F-7124 de l’Abwehr; son nom de code est Westminster (référence à un de ses amants). Toutefois, nous admettons qu’avec sa grande classe, Coco serait digne d’être dans un grand film d’espionnage hollywoodien du même calibre que James Bond avec Sean Connery. De toute évidence, à la sortie du livre, la maison Chanel a nié l’antisémitisme de la designer dans leur communiqué de presse.

About five months later, a new biography had been published in comic form. It’s quite a joy for those of us who love beautiful drawings and prefer lighter reading. The authors of the comic, Pascale Frey and Bernard Ciccolini (illustrations), paid particular attention to the dark childhood of Coco Chanel, who had suffered from abandonment and poverty. The world knows of Miss Chanel’s talents and achievements, but Frey and Ciccolini gave a more dramatic and moving touch to the character.

Environ cinq mois plus tard, une nouvelle biographie a été publiée en version bande dessinée. Cela fait le bonheur de tous ceux qui aiment les belles images et qui préfèrent une lecture plus légère. Les auteurs de cette bande dessinée, Pascale Frey et Bernard Ciccolini (illustrateur), se concentrent particulièrement sur l’enfance sombre de Coco Chanel qui a connu l’abandon et la misère. Alors que le monde connait les exploits et le talent de Mlle Chanel, Frey et Ciccolini donnent une touche plus dramatique et touchante au personnage.

However, a question crosses our mind regarding the publication of this comic. Was it simply a coincidence or a strategy from the House of Chanel to improve the image of their creator? If this was all orchestrated, we tip our hat to them! This is an excellent communication strategy for us get to know Coco Chanel on a more emotional level. The importance is to make her more pleasant, and to move us and overlook Coco’s doubtful actions. While there is a good chance that she collaborated with the Nazis, we still wonder under what motives? Perhaps it was for survival or maybe for the love of the Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage, a Nazi agent. We all know how love does make you do crazy things.

Une question nous traverse l’esprit concernant la publication de cette BD. Est-ce une coïncidence ou une stratégie de la maison Chanel pour redorer l’image de la créatrice? Si tout cela est orchestré, nous levons notre chapeau! C’est une excellente stratégie de communication pour nous apprendre à mieux connaître Coco Chanel à un niveau plus émotionnel. L’important, c’est de la rendre plus aimable et nous émouvoir, ce qui l’excusera de ses actions discutables. Il y a des fortes chances qu’elle ait collaboré avec les Nazis, mais pour quels motifs? Par survie ou par amour pour le baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage, un agent nazi? Vous savez comment les personnes peuvent faire des folies quand ils sont en amour!
