Earlier reports had indicated that Amazon Studios had decided which of its new pilots would be making it to series, and now it's official. Today the company announced that it is ordering six new shows, including Chris Carter's apocalyptic drama The After, the LA detective noir Bosch, Jill Soloway's comedic drama Transparent, and Mozart in the Jungle. Two kid's series have also been ordered, one of which is Gortimer Gibbon's Life On Normal Street — the first Amazon TV series to have been submitted through the company's open-door submissions program.

Viewership doubled from last pilot season

While this was just the second time Amazon held one of its online "pilot seasons," the company is clearly dialing in on what its customers are interested in. Last year, it put up 14 different pilots for Amazon Instant Video customers to watch and review, and ended up ordering only five (all but two were children's shows). This time Amazon put up just 10 pilots with a focus on drama and more mature programs, resulting in much stronger reviews and viewership numbers. "The whole pilot season had a really strong response, up about 100 percent from the previous one," says Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. "I think people are really responding to the concept of a public pilot season, so you should expect more where that came from."

Amazon Studios is also renewing the comedy Alpha House for a second season. Starring John Goodman as one of a group of US Senators that share a house in Washington, DC, the program was Amazon's first foray into original programming.

While the company doesn't have release dates in place, Price does say that some of the new shows will surface before the end of the year. Given that Amazon is expected to announce a video streaming device at its event on Wednesday, we're sure the company would love to have some of these new shows available as soon as possible.
