He Loves Me Not

Rate this book
In the game of love, everyone roots for the underdog. You know, that girl-next-door type who wears glasses and has a shy smile and who falls for the most popular boy in school…she’s the hero of every story. And when the shy girl takes off her glasses and the quarterback kisses her and the crowd roars and the movie fades to black, people sit back and are satisfied.

But what about the cheerleader? The one he dumps at the fifty-yard line and the one who runs off the field humiliated and sobbing? What about her feelings? What about her?

He Loves Me Not tells the story of what happens after the cheerleader is denied her fairy tale ending. Maggie's life was perfect--she had perfect friends, perfect parents, and a perfect boyfriend. But when she's abruptly dumped in front of the entire county by that perfect boyfriend, her life falls apart. With her clique, her friends, and her social standing obliterated, Maggie is resigned to a lonely, humiliating senior year of high school.

...at least until she meets AJ Abbott, a musician who breaks every rule her mother ever taught her. He has no college degree. He wants to be a rockstar. He wears entirely too much black and leather.

But despite their differences, Maggie is slowly drawn into AJ's rock and roll lifestyle, and she'll be forced to choose which is more important--clinging to her nonexistent popularity or learning that maybe there's more to her than her beauty queen tiaras and cheerleader pom-poms.

From the cover I was captivated as I loved the whole magazine theme that the author had chosen for her book and I knew I had to read it as though I may be in my late 20's now I still love my YA books. Reading the blurb it got me intrigued as the author was correct, most of the time we read books where the popular guy dumps the bitchy cheerleader for the nice underdog type girl , the girl whose a plain jane but really an amazing person or the book where the guy is a douche and he gets dumped for someone unexpected but much better. However in He Loves Me Not , we read as Maggie's life was perfect - she had the best boyfriend, popularity, winner of beauty contests and had it in the bag for homecoming queen. That was until her boyfriend ended up dumping her for a social outcast and not in private too but on the night they were recieving their crowns for homecoming. This threw Maggie off track as her life started to come crashing down until she met one night on the beach AJ - he was just a regular guy and not normally her type. He was pleased that she didn't know who he was as he is a famous musician and used to girls fangirling over him and being with him because of the "fame". As the story goes on, we discover that Maggie is a really neat person and that she can be herself around AJ and his friends which I thought was a really good direction that the author took. The other thing that I loved about this book was that Maggie never really lost her cool and the fact that despite her up's and down's some of her friends stayed by her side when they could and she got to discover really who her "real friends" were before it was too late ? This was a sweet YA romance and if you love the Southern world of things e.g beauty contests, their drawl and language and apple pies then you will absolutely love Book #2 of the series "He Loves Me Not".

The synopsis of this book is what caught my attention and the overall plot hooked me in and kept me engaged throughout.

I love the idea of a story picking up after the Hollywood ending. You know the movies, where the "ugly unpoplular girl" gets the quarterback popular boy. But what about the girl that the quarterback dumps? Should I even care? Well, this author made me care.

Everything about Maggie Marion is perfect. Perfect looks. Perfect grades. Perfect friends. Perfect boyfriend. . . .or not. One fateful day, in front of everyone, Bobby Bishop decides he is tired of perfect, forever filling the role in a Hollywood teen romance hero, as he goes after the emo girl.

I wasn't sure if the author wanted me to hate Maggie. Sure, she's a bit self-absorbed and has high expectations of others. But as her life begins to fall apart, she really tries to be the better person. There are so many opportunities where she could have lost her shit. But her proper upbringing and belief in being the better person, kept her leveled external, even though she was breaking apart internally.

What shocked me about this story was how all of her friends left her, all because of the football team. While her BFF, Caroline, was there in the early stages of the breakup, with time, even she begins to pull away. Her reasons for coming back, showed her true colors in my opinion. While it wasn't overnight, I loved how Maggie gradually saw her "friends" behavior as unappealing. No, she never gave up her love of pageants, but she found a purpose/goal beyond them. And at the same time made new friendships. Real ones where doing everything to help the other was more important than image.

I personally didn't read the previous book in the series, and it is not necessary to enjoy this one. However, if you did read that book, the 3 main characters in that story play a big role in Maggie's new life outside the popular crowd.

Maggie took the majority of the book to get over the breakup, and that was my only issue. Although she had this lifelong dream to marry Bobby, he showed time and time again with his words and actions that that ship had sailed. And he didn't try to buffer his new gf's harsh words. Instead, there is AJ, the sweet boy who gives the "unpopular" girl covered in seaweed, a chance to unload. His lending ear and thoughtful actions throughout make him an obvious choice over Bobby.

This story focuses on Maggie's growth, and while there is some romance, that is only a small part of the storyline. It is worth noting that this book has zero sex in it, firming planting itself in the YA category.

A sweet coming of age Young Adult story with a heroine that blossomed though her heartbreak and loss.

From the beginning, it was so easy to read and get lost in the story. I mean, I don't often read YA but with HE LOVES ME NOT it was just so easy to want to know what happens next.

It wasn't easy to love Maggie at first, I just couldn't see through her point of view, she grew on me. They way she went through her first heartbreak and all the sadness that came to her life, I was proud of her. She dealt with it in her very own way and it was great to see her grow into a strong woman.

She had her true best friends and a boy that just loved her for who she was. Yes maybe she wasn't everyone's favorite person. BUT the way she dealt with the hardships that life threw her way? It's just proved that being you is more important that standing up for an image that is too overrated.

For me personally, I couldn't find that emotional connection. I loved the way the story progressed and the way choices and decisions were made, but I just couldn't connect. I'm not sure how you'll interpret that but I always feel connection with the characters is one very big part of any story and maybe it was because it's a YA or because it was just a sweet story, either way, it was a good read that I'd recommend to any YA lover. There are so many strong massages that you will love to find out throughout it and characters that will portray every sort of emotional point of view.

Other than the no connection part, everything else was very well done.

The construction was great.

The writing was amazing.

The characters stayed true to themselves.

HE LOVES ME NOT is a fast and sweet read that will capture your attention from the very first page. It has a certain charm to it that makes you smile just because you can and you want to.

When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. Not because it is poorly written or the characters don't have depth, but because I disliked the main character SO much. Maggie is the kind of girl that you loved to hate when you were in high school; the one who had it all-until it all fell apart. Ms. Fowler does such a wonderful job of weaving Maggie together as a person that disliking her is effortless and you will find yourself reading the things she does and says with disgust. She uses the most clever and crafty ways to create vivid images in your mind that there is no way to like who she is. Maggie personifies the typical mean girl but adds a southern twist in an obnoxiously smooth way. After her world falls apart and Maggie begins to learn that who she is isn't all bad, she begins to like who she is and you find yourself liking her too. The talents that she has bubble to the surface and prove to be valuable to new friends (Nyx!) all the while allowing Maggie to be better in every possible way.

When I start reading books I have the awful habit of having to finish them quickly. Similar to the need to rip a band-aid off quickly to avoid the pain, I want to read the book quickly to know everything that happens. This book allowed me to do that. It isn't too long or too intense of a read. I was easily able to put it down to make dinner or take care of something else and pick it right back up and continue to read it without having the confusion that happens sometimes. I would absolutely recommend this book to others and would read it book again!

What a fun light-hearted NA/YA book. It's a sweet and short afternoon read. It only took me a couple hours to read it. This isn't my usually pick for a book but I did enjoy it anyways. There was a few scenes and even the ending that I felt were wrapped up a little to quickly but it didn't affect the book as a whole. I did not read the previous book in this series and I feel that didn't hurt me any when reading this one. I was not lost at all as far as the story goes. I thought it was great that the author picked to do a story about what happens when the the Hollywood ending is done for everyone else and the girl left behind is just left there. That drew me right in when I read the synopsis and I think she gave a great story to us. I defiantly recommend you pick this one up.

When I first saw the synopsis for He Loves Me Not by Tierney Fowler I was intrigued. Partly because it was about a cheerleader, and since I used to be one that caught my attention. But mostly because it speaks such a truth. We are always going on and on about the underdog. We love seeing that person find their HEA against all odds. But what about those people that we assume have everything going for them. The ones that from the outside look like they have the perfect life so we just assume their story isn't worth telling. They MUST NOT have the same feelings as us, the same right to a HEA as that underdog - because really they already have everything going for them. Well, we should all know that that is NEVER true and there is ALWAYS a great story behind everyone's life. And Tierney Fowler shows us just that in this sweet YA novel depicting the story of a HS cheerleader who was dumped on the 50 yard line.

I loved watching Maggie's growth throughout the book. Being dumped so publicly was a life-changing moment for her, it was devastating but what also impacted her was the reactions from her friends following it. It was all so very 'High School' but after all they ARE in HS! The catty behavior from the friends, the realization that sometimes your friends aren't who you thought they were at all. Those are HUGE teenage issues. When you think you have these amazing friends and then find out how blinded you were by circumstance. The lesson that you have friends for different reasons - and many are just there because of your common interests and aren't TRUE friends at all. This is that age when you start learning that very hard lesson. And Maggie was just hit over the head with it! But as she came to terms with it all and met AJ and his friends you see her groth really begin. She comes into her own while still keeping the essence of her character - which is so key to me.

AJ and Maggie together was just sweet romantic perfection. Their relationship built from friendship to more even though you could see the attraction between them from the start. They built their relationship with a strong foundation. Which couldn't have been easy seeing how far apart their worlds were. AJ is a rockstar - and the fact that Maggie is blind to this, that she has no clue who he is was just fantastic! watching them get to know each other was just so fun. The characters (all - including the side characters, including the ones you want to hate) were written fabulously.

If you love YA I definitely recommend He Loves Me Not. It was a fun, quick read that really highlighted Maggie's coming of age story.

He Loves Me Not is a well written and intriguing story featuring the high school “villain” aka the popular girl. We get to glimpse into the aftermath of what happens when she is left in front of the whole school and town during homecoming at the 50 yard line, when the popular boy found a connection with the nameless girl no one cared about. It is the formula for so many of the movies and shows I have watched and seeing the other side makes you stop and think. This book is not about revenge or falling in love again. It is about a girl who loved and had her heart broken, a girl who attempts to pick up the pieces. I loved watching Maggie struggle through the drama and frustration and the way she persevered. She is determined to make the best of what is happening and learn to find her way again. She is true to herself, both in her emotions and her expectations. One thing I appreciated is that she did not budge on who she was, instead she became self-aware. She learned to see things in a new light and as a result she grows as a person, all the while continuing to embrace her beauty pageant life. So often in books you see a physical and complete emotional transformation of the character and it changes everything about them. In this story, there is self-realization, the only thing she really needs. Her honesty and adorable love for all things Southern is genuine and endearing. Being able to understand her motivations and thought processes allows the reader to understand her true intentions, even if they are sometimes off the mark.

This story is not necessarily a love story. Sure there is adolescent love and hope for that affection being your forever love, but more than that it is about Maggie’s journey and her choice to open her eyes and see things in a new light. I loved how she learns to embrace new things when life doesn’t go her way. Her friendship and affection with AJ is sweet and something solid to add to the story, but never take away from what is happening. The drama and angst of high school life is well developed and the social statuses we read about share the gambit of what the best and worst of the experience could be. This book is a fun and wonderful story people will enjoy!

When I first started this book I was like what the hell am I reading? This is just a bunch of rich spoiled southern girls who throw out backhanded compliments and think its okay as long as they say "Bless her heart" after it. I was ready to say I can't even with this book. BUT then.... it morphed and I was enthralled into the story. I couldn't believe what I was reading. The popular girl gets dumped on her biggest night. Slowly she started losing her friends and while most of the time I would have been like HA! that is what she gets I didn't. I was upset and sad for Maggie. Why? Because the girl her boyfriend (Bobby) left her for for is a bigger bitch than she is. I was like, what the hell? Bobby made me mad because he essentially had no backbone.

Then enters AJ. Oh AJ. I love AJ. He really made Maggie open her eyes to the world around her. She slowly began to see the prejudices of her own as well as those around her. While yes she loves clothes, make-up and pageants she was staying true to herself in spite of her new friendship with AJ and his friend Nicole. I loved that. I love when a character can be themselves and not change that aspect of themselves while opening her mind and heart to the world and people (who are not like her) around her. AJ never pressured her for more he just wanted her to be happy.

Let's talk about the ending because UMMMMMM I need to know what happens next!! I don't want to give too much away but let me just say that the author did a great job with this book. Yes, I know at first I was complaining and it felt a bit slow but now I want to yell to everyone from the rooftops that they NEED to read this book.

*4.5 Hearts*

I was provided a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The story wasn’t bad, but it’s not going to be one of my favorites.

We all love those stories where the popular guy falls for the shy girl. But what happens to the cheerleader girlfriend when he does? He Loves Me Not tells the story of Maddie who gets dumped by her mancandy in front of the entire school. During senior year, nonetheless! But then she meets AJ and he doesn’t care if she’s popular or not. He likes her for her. But can Maddie be with him or does she run back to Bobby?

The book overall was just tooth achingly sweet and cute. Like eating a candy cane. But it was also a little bit abrupt and chaotic. Chapters would take major time jumps, and you wouldn’t know until you came across something that indicated two months had passed. And that bothered me, because it was like the writer wanted to skip to the end really quick and decided to leave gaps along the way. At least, that’s how I felt. The ending was also too sudden and left me with a little bit unsatisfied.

But looking at the characters, especially Maddie, I didn’t like her at first. She was too much cheerleader and too much ‘my momma says’ (which can get really annoying). But as the book progressed, you could see her grow, and even if she was still Maddie the Beauty Peagant Queen, she also discovered she was much more than that, and that made me happy.

In the end I gave the book 3 stars, because I really liked the idea of what happens to the cheerleader when the jock dumps her for the underdog. But the story felt a bit rushed at times and that’s why I couldn’t fully enjoy it.

A long time back I read Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous by Tierney Fowler, I loved it, it had a bit of everything in it for a NA book and ticked all the boxes for me. He Loves Me Not is book 2 in the series and is about AJ and Maggie (Although you do still get to see Nyx and Tristan).

I always bang on about it being hard to read something 'new' with NA books these days, with so many on the market but Tierney really did latch onto something good with this idea. Writing a book from the popular 'dumped' girls point of view was genius. As I started He Loves Me Not I admit, I didn't like Maggie. With her upbringing from her rich parents, popularity, queen bee, pagent type she really wasn't my cup of tea at all. Yet, the more I read about her I got that like everyone else, she was just a girl who loved a boy. I couldn't stand chloe on sight and was cussing her out probably as much as Maggie wanted too while reading this. I loved that Maggie really grew in this book but didn't really become someone new. Hers and AJ's meeting and relationship was unique too and so sweet that at the end I was left thinking, 'Please be another book, I want to see where they go with this'. I loved that this book had the 'right' ending and not what I necessarily wanted. I also loved how Maggie realised some truths in this book and trusted herself at times.

Over all, this book rocked! It was great seeing the interactions with Nyx (Nicole) and Maggie and also how Maggie helped NYX and vice versa. AJ was just brilliant, the romance was perfect and the ending couldn't have been more right. I loved this book and really hope this isn't the end and Tierney gives me more, because I really want more! 4 stars, a perfect YA/NA read!

3 STARS!

He Loves Me Not is a cute story about the popular girl who doesn't get the quarterback (or the guy she thought she wanted). In this situation, you may think she is the queen bee: who makes fun of the geeks and nerds, roaming the halls like the girl almighty. However, this is not the case. It's about a girl who lost sight of things around her and truly figures out the person she wants to become. Throw in a mysterious guy and things will definitely get interesting.

Thoughts:

PLOT LINE - The story was a really quick read. It's one of those stories where once you start, it will be over before you know it. The transition from scene to scene is smooth and you do look forward to the ending to see her fate. Will it be a fairy tale ending? Possibly. One thing I should warn you about is that it can be highly predictable. Sometimes you wish there was more depth and conflict between characters but if you want a light read, this book is for you.

CHEMISTRY - Although AJ is the musician, who can be more focused on his music than anything else, he can be distracted when someone catches his eye. A damsel in distress like Maggie, will definitely catch his eye. From the start, AJ is very sweet. You might not expect that from a rockstar dressed in all black and leather. When he finds someone who needs help, he will make sure to take care of them. He'll be there as a friend when everyone has left Maggie in the dust. When the friendship turns into something more...AJ will defend and save Maggie in the most adorable ways. Not only does AJ help her let loose of all the expectations around her, he builds back the confidence she has lost.

If I had to describe this book in one word? Cute

It was just a really sweet, often quirky with a side of kitschy little romance and a great coming of age story.

Although I really wish there was just a little more to this book because the ending was a little abrupt with a few unanswered questions (maybe we can get a sequel?!), I really liked the angle the author took with this book. We know the geek girl meets popular jock trope all too well, but what happens to the girl that’s left behind? What if the geeky girl isn’t the sweet girl we should be rooting for? What is life after being publicly dumped by the perfect jock boyfriend?

So this book had a really sweet romance, and there was a great hero who went above and beyond to get the girl but more over this is the story of a heroine coming into her own. At the beginning I had some serious doubts about whether I’d be able to relate to her but as the story progressed you could really see her growth and at the end I was rooting for her like a champ.

There aren’t many upsets here but it does have all the yummy angst you’d expect from a YA novel and some very satisfying moments of justice. It was a relatively short read and a great way to spend a couple of hours.

Love in high school especially during Senior Year can be tough even for a cheerleader. Prom, graduation, homecoming three things that can either make or break a girl and unfortunately it is a time that Maggie can`t wait to finish. Being dumped can be harsh but going from being popular to being shunned all in one week can be well quiet cruel. Tierney Fowler just made me laugh throughout the book by how well naive and sometimes silly Maggie sounded in the book. It felt to me the whole book was like a rollercoaster between Maggie and AJ. Seemed she was just so stuck in being dumped that she got confused with real feelings towards AJ. Don`t get me wrong high school is tough and seeing Maggie dealing with this just seemed like she could have handled it a lot better. All in all it just didn`t do anything for me seemed to juvenile for me. I wanted more of Maggie and seemed like Tierney could have made her stronger just seemed like she gave up on her and in some cases in the book seemed ditzy to me.

So ya know how we always root for the underdog..the shy girl who gets the hot football player from the witchy head cheerleader? Well what if that emo chick is really an uber bitch? A boyfriend stealing, mean, black wearing ho bag…what about the sweet southern girl that gets dumped in front of everyone on the 50 yard line…well this is her story.
Maggie is a true southern debutante. Right down to the “sugar”. Her 10 year plan is solid. Her future set. At least she thought it was. Maggie is such a sweet character with some southern sass and air headed moments. She is the girl you really would have hated in high school. But I kind of loved her in this story. I loved seeing her find herself.
AJ..tattooed rocker, pierced and just so very sweet. The opposite of the syrupy sweet golden boy that left Mags at the 50 yard line. Sometimes what you need is just a little something outside the box. AJ is definelty outside the box.
This is a sweet YA read that really drew me in. Opposites really do attract.

An interesting take on what happens to the cheerleader that gets dumped by the quarterback. Maggie is the quintessential head cheerleader , beautiful, a beauty queen and just concerned with what happens to her perfect life when the quarterback dumps her. Then she meets rocker AJ and realizes there's more to life than the white picket fence, 2.5 kids and her former quarterback husband. AJ (and Nyx) really expand Maggie's horizons and her definitions of what friends truly are.

ARC for honest review. I thought this story was very cute. I enjoyed it. It was different. It was not your cookie cutter new adult romance. I liked that about this story and found my self really involved in the story. It was creative and fun. I haven't read this author before, but I didn't have any trouble following the storyline and I will definitely be loooking for more.

I really enjoyed this book. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. It was an interesting read, and an interesting point of view from the previous book. I really enjoyed seeing the character development of AJ, since you kind of "knew" him from the previous book.

Cute, fun book. I love it when main characters figure out who they are after some form of trauma.
I wonder if there will be another in the series from a different vantage point.
