Volleyball Falls in Five to #6 BYUH

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (September 20, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (2-6, 0-2) lost a five set heartbreaker (25-12, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12) to visiting sixth-ranked BYU Hawai'i (5-3, 2-0) on Saturday at St. Andrew's Priory.

The Seasiders showed why they are the sixth best team in the country in the opening set. BYUH dictated play in the first set and grabbed an early lead.

Anyone who was thinking the match might be a sweep was jolted back to reality as HPU came to play in the second. The set was close throughout with HPU leading by one late at 21-20. HPU eliminated the drama by taking the next four points and the set. Three of the four points came on kills by Elizabeth Culpepper to tie the match at one all.

The Seasiders took a 6-2 lead right off the bat in the third set. HPU battled back to tie the set, and led briefly, but HPU was chasing for most of the frame. After the set was tied at 23, BYUH's All-American Shih Ting Chen notched two kills to deliver the set to the visitors.

With their back against the wall, the Sharks made the necessary plays to extend the match. HPU lead by one at 21-20 and got two kills down the stretch from Pomai Recca to force a fifth, and decisive, set.

The Sharks grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the fifth, but before long, it was tied at five. BYUH then went on a 4-0 run to take control. The Sharks valiantly fought off two match points but the comeback ultimately fell short.

The Sharks now head out on a five-game road swing, beginning with Chaminade on Friday.
