Mike McDonald will be continuing his education at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Oberlin, Ohio – Former Oberlin College baseball player and class of 2014 graduate Mike McDonald earned a postgraduate scholarship from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the organization recently announced.

A native of Weston, Connecticut, McDonald was just one of 29 male spring sport athletes to be selected for the award. He will receive a $7,500 grant from the NCAA to be used towards his postgraduate studies at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

A standout in the classroom and on the diamond, McDonald also earned Capital One Academic All-America First-Team honors and was a First-Team North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection in 2014.

A Third-Team American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) honoree, McDonald had an amazing senior season for the Yeomen. As a pitcher he posted a 6-4 record and had the second-best ERA in the NCAC at 2.01. His opponent batting average of .237 and 15 earned runs allowed were also second amongst all NCAC pitchers.

McDonald pitched in 12 games, making nine starts. He totaled 67 innings and recorded five complete games. He also racked up 62 strikeouts, which was good for third-best in the NCAC.

At the plate he batted .309 with six doubles, two home runs and 18 RBIs.

In the classroom, McDonald posted a 3.93 grade point average while majoring in both biochemistry and biology. Furthermore, he scored in the 99th percentile on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).

A lead contributor over the last four years, McDonald played in 138 games as a position player and had 48 appearances as a pitcher. He departed Oberlin with a career record of 15-14 to go along with five saves. As a hitter he posted a .292 batting average while adding eight home runs and 84 RBIs.

About the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
