FX Networks’ authenticated-video service has launched for Apple TV set-tops, providing access to full episodes and movies from FX, FXX and FXM channels — but not everyone will be able to log in.
With the addition of the FXNow service, Apple TV users whose pay-TV providers have a deal with the cabler can now watch original FX shows such as “Sons of Anarchy” (pictured, above), “Justified,” “American Horror Story” and “Archer” the day after they air.
In addition, FXNow provides access to shows on FXX including “How I Met Your Mother” and “Parks and Recreation,” as well as movies from FXM like “Live Free or Die Hard.” And, starting in October, FXX will launch “Simpsons World,” providing authenticated viewers access to every “Simpsons” episode through SimpsonsWorld.com and the FX Now apps.
But FXNow is not available to subscribers of DirecTV or Dish Network — and not to all cable TV customers, either. Currently, operators that have deals with FX include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-verse, Cox Communications, Cablevision Systems, Bright House Networks and Suddenlink Communications. The point of such “TV Everywhere” arrangements is to offer programming through a multitude of devices, while ensuring customers keep paying for subscription television.

Earlier this summer, Apple TV added the Fox Now app, providing access to full episodes of series including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “New Girl” and “Glee.” The five most recent episodes of Fox’s new shows will be available day-after-air for free on Apple TV, while full access is available only to subs of participating pay-TV providers.
Apple, which used to describe Apple TV as a “hobby,” had sold more than 20 million of the devices through early 2014. According to CEO Tim Cook, Apple TV hardware and content sales generated more than $1 billion in revenue in 2013.
