The Board of Selectmen in Weare accepted the police chief's resignation Monday.Click to watch News 9's coverage.Chief John Velleca announced last week that he was stepping down in response to a request from the Attorney General's Office after it decided not to pursue criminal charges against him. The attorney general was investigating allegations that he assaulted a coworker.Velleca had been on paid administrative leave since a restraining order was issued in the matter.Velleca succeeded longtime Police Chief Gregory Begin last year. Velleca was a new face who was supposed to turn things around after several incidents left the department in a negative light.In August 2013, Weare police attempting a drug bust shot and killed a suspect. A decorated sergeant who didn't fire the fatal shot was fired after the incident and is still fighting to get his job back.Officer Frank Jones was just reinstated after a lengthy battle for his job. He claimed he had been wrongly fired by the new chief. There is still no word whether he is back at the office.For now, Deputy Chief Sean Kelly is heading up the department as the town searches for someone else to take the reins.Monday's meeting was the first for the board since Velleca resigned. There was little discussion, saying they really had no choice.Although Velleca has worked in Weare for a year, his wife and daughter have remained in Connecticut, where he used to work.
