MOUNTAIN VIEW — Authorities investigating a noxious odor near several apartment buildings discovered two bodies inside a residence Wednesday night.

The bodies were discovered inside an apartment building on the 2000 block of California Street shortly before 11 p.m., according to Mountain View police spokeswoman Shino Tanaka.

The people found were not immediately identified. Police were still investigating and did not release any information about a possible cause of death.

Officials had originally been called to the area for a report of a noxious gas-like odor just after 6 p.m. When crews arrived, the smell was so bad that they immediately began evacuating two apartment buildings, and issued a shelter-in-place order for another nearby apartment building.

Four police officers were treated at the scene for issues related to the strong smell, Tanaka said.

PG&E crews shut off gas lines to the area as crews worked to find the source of the odor. A cause has not yet been determined

The apartment buildings would likely remain cleared until at least 4 a.m., Tanaka said. Those needing shelter could go to the community center at 201 S. Rengstorff Ave.
