Stephen Hawking Says A.I. Could Be Our 'Worst Mistake In History'

minimalist

The world's most famous physicist is warning about the risks posed by machine superintelligence, saying that it could be the most significant thing to ever happen in human history — and possibly the last.

As we've discussed extensively here at io9, artificial superintelligence represents a potential existential threat to humanity, so it's good to see such a high profile scientist both understand the issue and do his part to get the word out.

It can be dangerous, not entirely but there is a risk of course.

That's my thought as well.  It's a place we should still explore but to think nothing could ever go work and unanticipated consequences couldn't show up is a little more than naive, it's plain stupid.  It's a very interesting topic.

I completely agree...the future is scary, I feel sorry for us, and even more for the next generation. But there is still hope, although I'm not sure if it is still worth it to trust humanity anymore, we suck in so many ways..

Back to the topic, if we make A.I that powerful, than we might want to disconsider it, imho

The only way I could grasp the idea of "safe" AI is if we take it really slow, even if we're capable of it... even then it needs to have strong limitations. I'm not an engineer, my area is medicine but this sure is a very interesting topic to discuss without the "Skynet" jokes, because AI is not fiction anymore.

I have to agree with Hawking, it's not your hollywood "doomsday prophecy", what he is implying is basically that we have to be very careful with AI.

"Warning about the risks posed by machine superintelligence, saying that it could be the most significant thing to ever happen in human history — and possibly the last."

It's actually true, we, as humankind need to be more careful with delicate matters such as AI, of course, we are talking about super advanced technology, not even remotely like today's.

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

I think he is afraid of AIs doing everything for us which will cause us to be dependent and once the AI malfunctions we will be lost. (just my opinion about this but it may be wrong).

Seems like you have been taken over by half life 3 conspiracy's....

Unless A.I can learn better than humans, it can't be "better" than us. Well, at least thats what i tell myself.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

I don't think he's limiting his comments to only that. I think there are also scenarios we haven't even imagined. Currently, we aren't exactly a species that likes to take our time with things and think them through. It's more than possible that something could happen that we never even imagined. In that lies some of the danger.

It's not all end of the world stuff but I think it's just important to raise awareness and make sure decisions are thought through. For once we need to think about the long term and not the short term, which the current generation running things does so horribly.

We are on the path on simplifying every part of our daily lives, it will reach a point where we are AIs that are capable of fixed set of good responses that we interact with smoothly that also learns and improves based on our needs.

Imagine "Yui" from sword art online (only good example i can think of)

How she is actually just a complex ai program developed to interact with people, she then learns multiple things from that interaction (generates a huge database basically)

Next step = Self awareness or something close to that.

Now imagine this type of Ai being common in every household.

If they are able to communicate with each other, wham.
