Minimally invasive plastic surgery, also known as petit plastic surgery, has been established as a major aesthetic trend around the world as well as in Asia. Korea is leading this trend and doctors in other countries are paying particular attention to the techniques of Korean doctors. Dr. Francisco de Melo is a plastic surgeon from Portugal who runs his practice in Dubai. He has given talks at the launching symposium of Ellanse in Korea and performed a live surgery session at the APAS symposium. Dr. Francisco de Melo shares with D&PS his opinions on performing dermal filler and botulinum toxin injections in the two countries.
Q. What is the proportion of filler and botulinum toxin injections compared to other treatments at your practice?
Francisco de Melo: I am a consultant plastic surgeon at Aesthetica Clinic Dubai and perform many filler and botulinum toxin procedures. Especially, I perform a combination treatment called ‘BontA’ with two botulinum toxin injections and one filler injection. Here, the dermal filler injection plays a key role.

Q. Which dermal filler product do you use most often and why?
Francisco de Melo: My favorite filler product is Ellanse which is a PCL filler. Ellanse can bring satisfactory results with only a small dose. The change is seen on the day of treatment and lasts for a long period of time. It also improves the skin conditions as a powerful biostimulator. Ellanse is subdivided into S, M, L, and E, etc. according to the degree of duration and each type can be selected to fit the treatment goal. Ellanse has excellent physical stability compared to HA fillers and injection is quite simple as well. Its affordable price is another one of its many advantages.
Q. Which fillers do you use for different treatment areas?
Francisco de Melo: I use Ellanse most frequently, however, depending on the injection site, I also use HA fillers including Restylane, Juvederm and UmaJeunesse. I use HA fillers mainly for lip enhancement and augmentation as well as eyelid procedures. However, I generally prefer PCL fillers with good biostimulatory effect.
