From the Dean: When Religion Becomes Just, Plain Embarrassing...

Over the past few decades, since the emergence of fundamentalism on a grand worldwide scale, there has been much written about identifying the characteristics that can turn religion toward the vicious, psychotic and destructive.

Meet Our Graduate Assistants!

Fifteen graduate assistants are hard at work supporting special programs and initiatives of Seattle Univeristy's School of Theology and Ministry this year. We sat down with each of them this month and learned about their roles and what they're excited about in the coming year.

Faculty Elected, Association for Clinical Pastoral Education

Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry is pleased to announce that Dr. Faustino (Tito) Cruz, SM and Dr. Sharon Henderson Callahan have been elected to regional and national positions within the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). The Association is an accrediting body, recognizing exceptional programs nationwide that prepare multicultural, multifaith caregivers to serve individuals of all life situations and faith backgrounds.

October Edition: What Faculty are Reading & Watching

Dr. Mark Chung Hearn shares about a few books and two recent documentaries he's watched—including God is the Bigger Elvis about Dolores Hart, who was a star opposite Elvis Presley in Hollywood that became a Benedictine nun. Dr. Mark S. Markuly and Dr. Mark Lloyd Taylor share their recent pics as well.

All are Welcome! Discernment Workshop, 11/6

Are you discerning an important question? Are you wondering what to do next with your life, passions, gifts, skills, or career? Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry presents a free interactive workshop for those seeking to deeply consider the questions in their lives.

Faculty, Staff, Student & Alumni Updates

Some truly exciting announcements this month from Dean Markuly's travels and rich conversations all around the country, faculty research and publications on important topics of our era, a new staff person, and the great work of students and alumni for a more just and humane world. You won't want to miss these updates!

Inside the Classroom: Earth Community, Earth Ethics

Students in the school's Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership are committed to engaging some of the most critical issues of our time. One of today's most pivotal issues is that of climate change. For this month's Inside the Classroom look at STMM 5060 "Earth Community, Earth Ethics," we sat down with Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda to learn more about this course and what students are engaging this Fall Quarter.

Inside the Classroom: Confessing Lutheran Identity

A special opportunity is available this upcoming Winter Quarter 2015, for students and community members alike to engage the topic "Confessing Lutheran Identity in the 21st Century" with Dr. Michael Reid Trice. The topic has great relevance for all people of faith, particularly individuals that identify as Lutheran. In a world where influence of religion in culture and conversations is changing dramatically, religious identity is taking a different shape in both individual and communal spheres of life.

Resources: Economics & Pastoral Leadership Project

This month, staff and students within the school's Economics & Pastoral Leadership Project have been hard at work! The team created resources for students and alumni around the issue of student debt burden, and shared them with students at this month's annual lunch with Dean Markuly. The first of the two resources is a helpful "Fact Sheet" that outlines the issues of graduate students' and seminary students' debt burden. The second is a "Resource" that shares some loan payback strategies that may be helpful.

Afternoon Worship, 11/5 & 11/19

At Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry, we benefit from a rich exchange of songs and hymns, prayers and practices from Christian and Unitarian traditions—as well as from our interfaith partners and spiritual but not religious students. We exchange these arts and practices daily in the classroom, weekly in student community groups. We also gather in "Afternoon Worship" sessions throughout the academic quarter.

Prospective Students: Christifideles Info Session

The Archdiocese of Seattle is a proud supporter of the school's Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies and offers financial aid for individuals interested in lay ministry within local Catholic parishes. Come to this upcoming information session to learn more about the opportunities for support that this special program offers.

This interactive workshop will offer perspectives and strategies to help students more often regard writing as a wise and helpful ally.
