How Nestlé achieved the 'impossible'

In 2010, Greenpeace campaigned against Nestlé for buying palm oil from suppliers associated with deforestation. Nestlé decided to change. One of the first things it wanted to do was map its entire supply chain. Some in the industry said that this was impossible. Nestlé was taking a step into the unknown. Four years on, Benjamin Ware, Nestlé's Manager of Responsible Sourcing, reflects on the company's journey so far into transparency and traceability.

Wilmar working to prevent exploitation

Palm oil plantations rely on migrant workers. The number of Indonesian migrant workers forcibly sent abroad has reached seven million. Wilmar - one of the world's largest palm oil producers - is playing a big role in the rights of workers by implementing its No Exploitation commitment. TFT's Faisal Fuad has written about a workshop he went to that tackled the exploitation of workers.

Tackling the threats to European forests

TFT is best known for its work in the tropics, but companies need to know how their supply chains affect northern forests too.
TFT's Björn Roberts went to the Tatra mountains in Slovakia. He reflects on the threats to European woodlands and the kinds of solutions that will be needed.

Making progress between two worlds

Businesses and NGOs haven't always got on well. The conflict between them has resulted in improvements in natural resource management and the way people are treated. But today, the two are interacting in a different way that brings both to the middle ground to grapple with the environmental and social problems we are faced with. TFT's Scott Poynton looks at how some businesses are seeking input and support from their long-time NGO adversaries in order to make real change.

Updates from out in the field

Since becoming a TFT member in September, Cargill - the US's largest palm oil importer - has published its action plan on how it is going to map its supply chain. You can read that and also the High Carbon Stock (HCS) study we did with them. TFT member Wilmar, has published an update on a palm oil development causing concern in Balikpapan Bay, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. We have supported Wilmar to engage with stakeholders in Balikpapan Bay. A feedback meeting was held with 28 community representatives, with the aim of listening to concerns and finding a way forward. The full three-page Wilmar update can be read here.
