*** Received entries are listed here ***

*** WIN one of three Acer Iconia Tab 8 devices ***
16 GB Quad Core with 2GB RAM, running Android Kit Kat 4.4.2

PLUS up to 10 prizes of $50.00

...and of course you get bragging rights..."Yeah, my demo is on Steam...STEAM!"

You only have until the end of October 2014 to get creative and submit your winning entry.

What do we want? We're ready to showcase AppGameKit V2 to the world through the Steam Store. We need up to ten demos of what can be achieved with the latest version of AGK.

We don't need highly complex games and apps. These demos should be easily picked up by beginners and understood so that in no time at all they can be experiencing the great things AppGameKit V2 can do. Here's some pointers to get you started:

Sensors - they're already a great feature before you get started on the code. What can you do to showcase them?
Render to Image - it's simple to do, but how can you incorporate it into an awesome demo?
Shaders - well, the sky is the limit, let your imagination run wild.

Use any media you like, as long as you have the full rights to distribute it. You are responsible for the copyright of your assets.

Remember - make your creations impressive, but keep them simple. Absolute beginners will be learning from your code. Make sure all of the source code is well documented with comment lines.

Submission details will follow shortly.

Question:

Answer:
Quote: "We're ready to showcase AppGameKit V2"

EDIT: I could be wrong, it might be worth an official response but I imagine it might be possible to submit something that is a good demonstration of what is possible in both versions on reflection. Not trying to be 'elitist' or anything, just it's the reason they are doing the competition.

Well yeah we saw that I can't speak for VanB, but I was asking (plus-one-ing) because I would have thought it would be fine to use 108, since AFAIK you can do absolutely everything in V2 that you can do in 108.

Certainly not, you're just pointing out what should be a really obvious answer to our question

I need to check with Rick as he's the one giving out over £750 of prizes. But in the meantime as time is of the essence, my informal answer is this:

You may submit a V108 demo, but bear in mind that if you have access to V2 then you should try to use the new features. The code must also be syntactically compatible with V2, for example you couldn't use any of the new commands as user-defined function names. The demos will be tested and judged in V2 (maybe you can get a V2 owner to test your demo)

This competition lends itself to Tier one because the emphasis is on simplicity for beginners. On Steam, the target audience is people immersed in the gaming world and starting to think they could make something themselves.

A Tier 2 project could win, but remember you are putting yourself at a disadvantage in the simplicity criteria.

Ah, so you intend to compile them yourself.

I was thinking that. Then there'd be no issues.

Yes, bear in mind these will be included in the demo package with the source code, for beginners to learn from. They must be able to compile them in V2, which is what they will be bundled with.

Not really, there are a few examples such as render to image given above. Some of the new commands allow for some interesting possibilities. Still trying to decide what I might actually have time to do... not much I think in 2 weeks. I have some other projects screaming to be done.

If it takes you more than 2 or 3 evenings, then you've probably gone for something more complicated than you need to.

You can submit anything that is simple enough for beginners to understand.

Personally, I think that headset looks really hard to construct

I think I am going to take a look and see if I can't make something. A small demo sounds like fun

Also great to hear that you are getting serious about marketing AppGameKit now.

Well how small are we talking about?

I have a demo that could be considered a very small game. 800 lines. I could probably halve the count but it would be a lot less impressive. It uses about a dozen or so different fundamental AppGameKit features. Physics, audio, input, simple 3d effect, particles, sprites, memblocks. Everything's pretty well laid out but not perfectly clean. It's very fun to hack away at though. There's a ton of variables that can be tweaked for lots of fun.

The latest version:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mh2vkv1vh42rc4s/space%20adventure.zip?dl=0

I've created a cutdown version here that I'm hoping is more appropriate for what you're going for:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/oje97d2wn5zfbvg/space%20adventure%20cutdown.zip?dl=0

I'll release the code v2 tested (if I can find somebody) once the submission details are out.

As far as the judging criteria goes, are these going to be judged on line count?

If so, what would be a good line count?

Also, can we split our code up into multiple source files or would prefer everything be in the main.agc (I assume one source file is easier for beginners)?

The judging will be based on how good a demonstration of AppGameKit the code is, and how easy it is to learn from. You could do something spectacular in 10 lines of code that doesn't need much explanation. Equally you could write 3,000 lines of code but be a very good teacher of coding techniques and provide excellent structure and comments that are simple to follow.

Hello BatVink!

I have tried to send you a zip.file with my demo, but I got a failure message, that the server for batvink@gmail.com doesn't allow zip-files, altough I send the mail to your gamecreators mail address.
I have sent you now a link to my amazon cloud for downloading the zip file. Did you get it? Are there other possibilities to send the demo to you?

Bye,

Hi BatVink

You mention an apk, so is the expectation these demos/games are primarily for Android devices? or are Windows demos/game equally acceptable (I am guessing yes)?

cheers

The entries are being forwarded to my Gmail address, which rejects Zip files. You can get around this by renaming the file to _zip.

E.g MyGame.zip -> MyGame._zip

Yes, anything that is a good demo of AGKs abilities is acceptable.

I have sent my entry into the Acer Iconia competition.

It is called Baws and you have to collect the balls in cups, It really is much more fun than it sounds.

Thanks to TGC for another fab contest.

I have an Idea for another entry, and I will see if I can do it before the deadline.

I'd like to say yes, but unfortunately this one is on the tightest of schedules. Rick needs to organise the winning entries into the Steam AppGameKit package.

The absolute cutoff point is Midday (GMT), Saturday. For anyone outside of Europe, be aware that we are no longer in British Summertime. The time can be found here
