How well do you know your favorite Instagram girl? Can you recognize the curves of her lips and the gaps in her teeth? In the video for “Famous Phone Figure,” we see back-lit beauties from a distance, their faces in shadow, and close-up we see their lips, but who they are remains a mystery, unless you’re very-very familiar with the cool girls you stalk on the phone. The “who is she?” premise serves the purpose of the song quite well, at the end we even see one of them on their phone, perhaps crafting the perfect pic of herself living another amazing day while we sit on the couch.

The song is great. Allah-Las apply their vintage sensibilities to the modern world. This coming from a band whose Instagram is full of beaches and the most beautiful places in the whole world. They seem to live in a dream, or at least that’s how it appears, wink-wink. “Famous Phone Figure” offers a strong, tantalizing warm-up to the new Allah-Las album, “Calico Review,” coming Sept. 9 on Mexican Summer. For their third record, Pedrum Siadatian, Miles Michaud, Matthew Correia, and Spencer Dunham recorded at the historic Valentine Recording Studio in Los Angeles, which closed in 1979 but reopened in July 2015. The band got to use vintage recording equipment including a 1964 Universal Audio 610 soundboard, which Brian Wilson used to record the iconic Beach Boys album, “Pet Sounds.”
