ORU Thwarts Men’s Soccer’s Comeback in OT, 4-3

Huskies force overtime with two goals in four minutes late in second half

TULSA, Okla. – Down 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, HBU made a furious comeback by scoring twice in a four-minute span and force overtime, but Oral Roberts' Tarik Salkicic scored on a corner kick to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 victory Monday evening from Case Soccer Complex.

Stefan Lamanna, Alex Baez, and Patrick Toh each scored for HBU (1-3-2). Thilo Borgmann had a career-high three assists. Philip Poser suffered the loss in goal as he made two saves in 97:04.

Johnny Chavez continues to be a thorn in HBU's side, as he led ORU (3-2-1) with two goals and one assist. He had a match-high six shots and three shots on goal. Chavez has four goals this season, three coming against the Huskies. Ben LaCourse made three saves for the win.

Lamanna scored his second goal in as many matches, when his shot beat LaCourse in the 8th minute, assisted by Borgmann, to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Chavez tied the match at 1-all.

The two teams entered halftime knotted at 1-1. ORU outshot HBU, 8-3, and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Neither team could get the upper hand until Chavez scored his second goal of the match in the 66th minute.

Juan Diego Padilla put the Golden Eagles up 3-1 with 13 minutes left in regulation, but Borgmann sent in a beautiful corner kick three minutes later that was headed in by Baez to make the score 3-2 in favor of ORU.

In the 84th minute, just four minutes after the Huskies came within one, Gustavo Alvarado's shot was blocked, resulting in another corner kick. Borgmann's corner magic worked again, as Toh headed in a shot to knot the game at 3-3.

ORU scored the game winner in the 97th minute, as the Golden Eagles were awarded a corner kick. Gerardo Salas took the corner. Salkicic took a shot, which was deflected, but had just enough to squirt past the line in the lower right corner.

ORU outshot the Huskies, 16-11, in the match and had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

HBU begins Western Athletic Conference play next weekend, Oct. 3 at newcomer Incarnate Word. Kick-off is at 7:30 pm. The Huskies and Cardinals meet again at Sorrels Field Oct. 11 at 7 pm.
