HELLO!

I'm Jonathan Stiers (pronounced Styers). Join me as I share my adventures in food, design, entertaining and travel. I hope you enjoy and find some inspiration!

One Year Anniversary!

It's hard to believe that it's only been a year. It's funny, when most people reflect on the time passing, it's usually out of disbelief, due to how fast time flies. In the case of my blog, it actually seems like I should be celebrating three years instead of one. Looking back, I can definitely say it's been a lot of fun and a lot of work.

I started this blog as I wanted/needed a creative outlet beyond my day job, as a Creative Director in retail. While I've art directed many photo shoots throughout my career, including food, I knew nothing about actually photographing food when I started a year ago. Some might think it's as easy as pointing the camera and shooting, but it's so much more. A lot of people can cook really well, but it's one thing to be able to cook and quite another to make it look perfect for the camera. Over the past year I've learned so much about props, food styling, lighting and some tricks along the way, to get the best shot. That's all in addition to figuring out what camera I'd need, what lens and how to work all those buttons! I've had a great time and while there have been some definite "fails," I continue to stay inspired and eager to learn more.

Beyond food, I enjoy sharing my experiences with others. With a blog, you have to plan, plan, plan. It's a simple feat to dine at a restaurant that you love and simple tell others, "You have to go there, it's amazing, you should order this or that." With a blog, you truly have to document your experience, taking notes AND photos.

There have been a couple of times that I've boldly taken my camera in to a restaurant, not minding when people stare as I take photos of my food, before eating. (See posts: Night at the Museum and The Wild Fork: A Tulsa Tradition) I realize people do this all the time with their mobile phones, but imagine me doing it with a full-size Canon camera and 50mm 1.2 lens and lens hood. People stare.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I've loved every minute of it. Looking back on how much work goes in to a blog and now know why it feels like three years instead of one. To deliver great content, that you hope people will want to read, you have to thoughtfully develop and curate the best content and I welcome the challenge of doing just that.

Below are a few of my favorite posts from the past year.

Thank you to those who have followed along and for the continued support!
