Penguins hang on in high-tempo affair

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — From tipoff until the final seconds on Saturday, there wasn't a dull moment in the Dominican University of California men's basketball team's 114-112 victory over Simon Fraser University of Canada.

The Penguins packed all 114 points into 40 minutes. That set a mark for most points in a regulation game since the Penguins' 95-59 win over Pacifica last Nov. 21 and the most points in a game since Dominican's 110-106 double overtime thriller over Cal State East Bay last Nov. 9. The mark was a point shy of the Penguins' record-high 115 points in a triple overtime win over San Francisco State in 2012.

After missed attempts at both ends by either team, Josh Ramirez opened the scoring with a layup in the paint — that set the tone for his career-high 26 point, nine-rebound night. Roderick Taylor Evans gave the Clan a brief lead with a three-pointer but Matt Hayes answered with a three-pointer of his own to put Dominican back in front at 17:58. The Penguins led the rest of the half, going up by as many as 12, and led 57-49 at the half.

Dominican began the second half on a Matt Hayes three-pointer to push the lead back to 10 but SFU's quick up-and-down pace shaved the lead to six twice. Still, Dominican easily broke the press on a number of occassions, as evidenced by their staggering 26 points on fast break and 78 points in the paint. Yet, the lead wasn't safe despite a pair of techincal fouls against Simon Fraser that built the Dominican lead to 79-71 with under 12 minutes to go. SFU eventually cut the lead to one, 91-90, with 7:03 to go on another Evans-Taylor bucket, and Sango Niang's basket at the six-minute mark evened the contest at 92-92. Dominican pushed the lead back to seven yet Simon Fraser wiped away the lead yet again, tying the game at 112-112 on a basket from Niang and a pair of Evans-Taylor free throws. Dominique Taplin, who cut through the press most of the night and dished out a career-high 11 assists, took the ball himself in the Penguins' final possession, driving to the rim for a layup with 7.5 seconds to give him seven points on the night. Niang took a long-range three-point attempt with a second to go but the Penguins came up with the rebound to seal the victory.

In addition to Ramirez, four Penguins reached double digits and set season bests. Hayes and Mathew Lipski both finished with career-highs of 17 points and 16 points, respectively, with Lipski also grabbing eight rebounds. Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten also matched a season-high with 15 points. Jonny Bates added 12 points. Dominican shot 63.4 percent (45-of-71) from the floor and dominated the glass, grabbing 49 boards, 23 more than the Clan.

Five members of the Clan reached double digits. Michael Harper paced all players with 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Niang added 25 points, Taylor-Evans finished with 19 points, Justin Cole scored 14 points, and Denver Sparks-Guest added 10 points in the loss.

Dominican hosts Sonoma State on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m., marking the fifth season in a row the two teams square off. Dominican came out on top last Nov. 15 with an 80-78 victory in Rohnert Park.
