Dustdevils Deter Aggies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Laredo, TexasThe OPSU men's and women's basketball teams came out empty-handed after a long road trip to Laredo, Texas for Thursday night's Heartland Conference match-up with Texas A&M-International University.

The Aggie women took a twelve-point loss (60-72) after a strong second-half of play. Down 23-37 at the break, OPSU came back to outscore the Dustdevils 37-35 in the final twenty minutes but were unable to climb out of the first-half deficit. TAMIU had a great day at the boards pulling down 49 rebounds for the game; the Aggies totaled 28, but took away ten balls of 21 Dustdevil turnovers.

Brittany Alavinejad and Sade Tutson led the Aggies in scoring Alavinejad totaled 15 points going 4-6 from beyond the arc and Tutson finished with 14 points scoring 9-11 from the line. The pair led the game in steals with three each. Kiera Waters and Hannah Tatum led the team in rebounds with eight and six respectively. TAMIU's leading scorers were Jessica Prieto with 20 points and Keiona Mathews with 19 points; Alexis Thomas totaled a game-high 10 rebounds and Mathews led the game in assists with six.

OPSU's men were held to 28 percent shooting from the field while the Dustdevils averaged 53 percent and owned the lead throughout the game taking a 75-55 victory over the Aggies. TAMIU outscored the Aggies 38-12 in the paint and 20-7 on second-chance points. The Aggies protected the ball well with only eight turnovers for the game, but were beaten at the boards by 19 rebounds.

The Aggies made the most of their chances at the line averaging 83 percent in free-throw shooting; they were an impressive 29-35 for the game with Antonio Manns, Jr. hitting 12-14 to help earn him the game-high in scoring with 23 total points. TAMIU only got twelve chances at the line and averaged 50 percent. Manns also led the Aggies in rebounds with eight with TAMIU's David Horst taking the game-high with 10 boards. Anthony Alston contributed seven assists for the Dustdevils for another game-high.

Both OPSU basketball teams hold overall records of 3-24 with one conference win each. The Aggies will wrap up the 2014-2015 season in San Antonio on Saturday with conference games against St. Mary's University. Live stat and video links are available on the OPSU Aggie Athletics website.
