Doug Liman hits the big time with Edge Of Tomorrow, an extremely satisfying and well crafted summer blockbuster. Military officer William Cage (Tom Cruise) is sent to the front line in a planned attack on an invading alien race. But when Cage is killed, he finds himself starting over in a time loop – something that attracts the attention of fellow soldier Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt in kick-ass heroine mode), who carries the answer to saving Cage and winning the war. Like Groundhog Day on illegal stimulants, Edge Of Tomorrow is action-packed entertainment to the max, albeit one with a suitably fleshed out script that’s full of imaginative curveballs and seldom irritates. There’s a welcome dose of humour, too, that’s helped along by terrific back-and-forth chemistry between Cruise and Blunt. Liman’s direction is a tad clunky and the effects leave a lot to be desired, but when a film is this thrilling, those are minor qualms offset by its relentless forward drive.
