KEARNEY, Neb. – Freshman
Tyler Mies placed fourth at the Nebraska-Kearney Open on Saturday (Nov. 22), hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Mies, a freshman from Andale, Kan., placed fourth in the 149 lb. class. He won his first three matches and finished 4-2 on the day. Mies started with a 14-2 major decision win over Alex Warren of Central Oklahoma. He then picked up consecutive 3-1 decision victories. First, Mies defeated Jacob Solomon and advanced to take on Orlando Guerra of New Mexico Highlands, who Mies won by the same 3-1 score. With a spot in the finals on the line, Mies took on Jake Anderson of Chadron State. Anderson, who went on to win the weight class, won by a 5-0 decision. In his next match, Mies got a 13-4 major decision win. Battling for third place, Mies fell, 6-2, to Terrence McKinney of Chadron State to finish in fourth place.
In the 125 lb. class, sophomore
Dustin Reed went 3-2. He started with a 15-0 tech fall win over Victor Munoz of New Mexico Highland. In his second match, he fell at 2:23 to Trenton Piatt of Western State. Piatt went on to win the 125 lb. class. Reed won two straight after the loss to Piatt. He won 13-7 over Josiah Seaton of Colby CC. The sophomore defeated Robert Ozuna of Chadron State by a 9-2 decision to need one more win to advance to the third place match. Reed finished in sixth as he forfeited his match against Zack Garcia of Colorado.
Sophomore
Noel Torres went 2-2 in the 165 lb. class. The Emporia, Kan. native started with two straight wins. He won by 5-0 decision over Nate Taylor of Morningside and then defeated Cody Keck of Doane College by a pin at 1:16. Torres lost in his third bout by a close 3-2 decision to JaCobi Jones of Colorado State. In his final match, Torres fell by a 4-1 decision to Bruno Nicoletti, who placed third, of Coloardo State.
Freshman
Christian Frame also went 2-2. In the 149 lb. class, Frame lost to start his day by an 8-3 decision to Jose Chavez. In the consolation bracket, the Goddard, Kan. native picked up two wins. He defeated Jake Messink of Colorado State by a 12-8 decision and then won via a fall at 1:58 over Brandon Stanley of UCO. His day ended with a 7-3 loss to Jarod Albo.
Also in the 149 lb. class was Forlando Parker, who finished at 1-2 on the day. He won by an 8-2 decision over JD Culp of Central Missouri. The Wichita Heights product lost by a 7-2 decision to Seth Harrington in his second match. His day ended with a close 8-6 decision loss to Andrew White of Morningside.
In the 197 lb. class,
Dalton Weidl went 1-2. The Ottawa, Kan. native started with a 6-4 decision win over Robert Schneider of Central Missouri. In his next bout, Weidl suffered a loss to Jake Anderson of Nebraska via a pin at 1:36. A close 7-6 loss to Chad Rous of Fort Hays State ended Weidl's day at 1-2.
Kris Workman went 0-2 in the 133 lb. elite class, and
Zach Duwe was 0-2 in the 157 lb. class.
Juan Ortiz finished 0-2 in the 184 lb. class.
The Jets are back in action in two weeks at the Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays State, on Dec. 17 in Hays, Kan. The event starts at 9 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
