  • Series: The Statesmen and Buccaneers have met 90 times, with Delta State leading the all-time series 51-39. DSU claimed a 72-68 victory in the first meeting of the season on Dec. 11 at Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn.
  • Short Story: Christian Brothers University evened the season series with Delta State University after claiming a 71-55 victory over the Statesmen Saturday, Jan. 31 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Despite playing without two starters, the Statesmen hung tough throughout the league contest, but could not slow down the Buccaneers 3-point shooting, as CBU hit on 14-of-23 beyond the arc. Devin Schmidt led DSU with 18 points and LaQuavious Cotton chipped in with 16 points. Trey Casey led CBU and all scorers with 27 points.

How It Happened
  • After the Bucs built a large first half lead, the Statesmen clawed back into the game with an 11-2 run making it 41-40 with 12:33 to play. CBU quickly answered the run and closed out the game on a 30-15 stretch.
  • Delta State finished the night shooting 39.6 percent after making 19-of-48 from the field. The Statesmen were 5-of-14 from 3-point range and 12-of-14 at the free throw line. Christian Brothers hit on 52 percent of the attempts (26-of-50) from the floor and was lights out from 3-point range, as the Bucs connected on 14-of-23 shots. DSU held the rebounding edge 28-27, but neither team could control the paint.
  • DSU and CBU finished the game tied with 22 points in the paint. The Statesmen outscored the Bucs 16-7 off the bench and 10-7 off turnovers. Both teams finished with eight turnovers each.
  • The Statesmen placed three players in double figures, led by Devin Schmidt's 18 points. The sophomore from Seiverville, Tenn., was 5-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-8 from 3-point range. Schmidt's performance pushed the sophomore passed the 900-point plateau in 54 games.
  • LaQuavious Cotton added 16 points and Alister Chisholm chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
  • P.J. Davis closed the evening with six points and seven rebounds. The freshman from Cleveland, Miss., also blocked two shots.
  • Jake Maestranzi, a sophomore from Chicago, Ill., dished out a career-high six assists in just his third start for the Statesmen.
  • Junior forward Declan Harrick tied his career-high with six points in GSC play. The Melbourne, Australia native also cleared six rebounds.
  • CBU's Trey Casey led all scorers with 27 points, including five 3-pointers.  
  • The Bucs placed four players in double figures, including Casey's 27. Ryan Fleming finished with 12 points, while Charlie Oswald and Jeff Larkin added 11 points apiece.
  • Saturday's game was the ninth the Statesmen have played with at least two starters being out of the lineup. DSU missed the services of Jack Madgen and Zelvin Smith, Jr.  
  • CBU led 36-23 at the half. Casey led CBU with 16 at the half, while Cotton paced the Statesmen with 10.

Beyond the Numbers
  • Devin Schmidt eclipsed 900-career points in 54 games over the last two seasons.
  • LaQuavius Cotton has scored in double-figures in seven of the last eight games.
  • For the third week in a row and fifth time this season, Cleveland native PJ Davis garnered the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week accolade. 
  • Christian Brothers has not won at Walter Sillers Coliseum since Dec. 1, 2012.

  • The Statesmen travel to Pensacola, Florida, to face the Argonauts of the University of West Florida. DSU and UWF are currently battling for positioning within the Gulf South Conference race.
