Bobcats Take Pair from Cavaliers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - West Virginia Wesleyan used a pair of solid pitching performances, including a complete game two-hitter by Riley Metz in the second game to sweep UVa-Wise in Mountain East Conference baseball action Monday.  The Bobcats won the opener 3-1 before Metz's masterpiece led to a 4-1 win.

With the pair of victories, West Virginia Wesleyan took all four games from the Cavaliers who entered winners of five of their previous six contests.

UVa-Wise (5-15, 5-9) got the day off to a good start in the top of the first inning of the first game.  Chaz Tanner doubled to lead off the frame and came around to score when Jordan Olinger lined a two-out double.

West Virginia Wesleyan (7-8, 6-8) responded with two runs in the home half of the inning as Michael Logsdon and Metz each had RBI hits in the inning.

The Bobcats added an unearned run in the third when James Fraser singled in Logsdon with two outs.

It would be all the run support Wesleyan starter Chris Hall would need as he scattered five hits in 4.2 innings of work.  Dillon Wagman would come out of the bullpen to toss 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one baserunner while striking out five.

Tanner was the only Cavalier with more than one hit in the contest as he went 2-4 from his leadoff position.

Logsdon went 3-3 for the Bobcats who struck out just one time as a team at the plate.

Wesley Thornton was the tough luck loser for UVa-Wise.  The freshman allowed just two earned runs while surrendering seven hits in six innings of work.

Game two again saw UVa-Wise get an early lead.  Tanner walked to start the contest, stole second, and then scored on a RBI single by Brett Yates.

An inning later, Wesleyan tied the game when Travis Renner singled inside the third base bag to plate Logsdon.

The 1-1 score would hold until the home half of the fourth frame when Michael Bolla had a sacrifice fly RBI and Logsdon scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-1 lead.

The Bobcats added a fourth run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Fraser.

Metz did not allow a hit after the fourth inning in his 112 pitch complete game effort.

Logsdon added his second 3-3 performance of the day to finish the doubleheader 6-6 with four runs scored and an RBI.

UVa-Wise will return to action on Wednesday when Carson-Newman visits Stallard Field.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
