Sean Is Fighting For His Life And His Friends And Family Have Set Up This Site To Help Him In The Fight!
About Sean:
Born in the summer of 1970, (right at the beach) Sean has spent his entire life trying to keep his feet in the sand and his heart with the ocean. He's lived a hundred lives in his past 44 years and worked just about every job there is in order to keep chasing waves as far as his wallet would allow. He's always said that if a man was judged by the quality of his friends, then he'd be a king. What's strange about Sean's battle with kidney failure, is that he's always tried to stay in shape, eat right and encourage others to do the same. One of his favorite things is to make people laugh, pick them up when they're down. Sean would give you the shirt of his back if you need it.
When tragedy struck, Sean was in the prime of his life, with the best job he'd ever had scaling wind turbines all over the country. In November, excited to spend the holidays with his family things started to go wrong with his health. He was so excited about being home in Ventura to spend time with his family and suddenly, he was having problems breathing. His condition deteriorated over the next couple of weeks and his wife Leah, took him to the hospital to get checked out. He was immediately admitted and they started treating him for hypertensive emergency. From there, a gamut of tests revealed that he was in stage 5 kidney failure with his kidneys functioning at only 7%.
Unbeknownst to him or anyone else, he was on the verge of stroke or death. After a week in the hospital and having to spend Thanksgiving connected to tubes, he had a kidney biopsy done to determine the extent of the damage and to find some answers. Five days later, all hell broke loose. While sitting in his room with his parents and wife, his kidney suddenly started bleeding uncontrollably. He was rushed into emergency surgery and had to have his right kidney removed to save his life. He began dialysis shortly after and a myriad of medications. After a total of 15 days in the hospital he was finally able to come home. Weeks past waiting for the kidney biopsy results to come back which still did not provide a firm diagnosis as to what went wrong. Since then, his weeks have been filled with doctor appointments and 4 hour dialysis treatments 3 times a week. His only hope is that he can get a kidney transplant. He just had a bone marrow biopsy to determine if a rare bone marrow cancer may be the culprit. Luckily, that's not the case. The foreseeable future is more testing to narrow down what went wrong so he can qualify to be on the kidney transplant list. As one could imagine this has not only been emotionally but financially devastating to Sean and his family.
Friends Step In To Help:
After a group of Sean's friends learned of his condition, we wanted to know what we could do to help. Sean and Leah are very humble folks, and not the type to ask people for money. Well, that's what they need and we're here to help. The bills are piling up, and Leah has to be a near full-time caregiver, and we're trying to help ease the financial burden to save our favorite 'Surfing Dick.' Many of us have witnessed save the lives of other people--he got the nickname 'Mitch Buchannon', David Hasselhoff's character in the tv she Baywatch, because of Sean's unofficial post as the lifeguard of Pacific City, Oregon. Several surf newbies, not familar with the currents of that can pull people out to sea in Pacific City, got into serious trouble. Sean witnessed this several times, and immediately wetsuited up, grabbed his board and battled through cold and heavy seas to help people to safety. It seemed like every week we'd hear about another life he had saved.
Now it's our turn to save his. We've set a goal of $15,000 to help offset Sean's mounting bills and to remind him that a lot of people love and care for him and that he's got to keep duckdivng the hardest seas he's ever faced, and fight to keep going. We love you Sean.
