NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College Tennis team sent four pairs to the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) held at Smith and Mount Holyoke College this weekend.
The NEWITT tournament functions differently than most tournaments as the format is a "mini dual match." Each team of two competes in a doubles match and then each partner plays a singles match against the opposing team. The winning team is the one that wins two of the three different matches played.
In
Chris Davis C flight play, the duo of sophomore
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) and senior
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) competed as Smith 1 and fell to MIT, 3-0. Smith's second duo in the flight, sophomore
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and first year
Samantha Peikes (), battled in their opening round match but fared similarly, dropping 3-0 to Middlebury College.
Competing as Smith 3 in the D flight, senior
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and first year
Poomi Arunachalam () lost a tough opening round match to the Nichols College 3 squad, 3-0. Smith 4 of first year
Katherine Hazen () and fellow classmate
Jimin Amanda Lee () lost a hard-fought match to Babson College, 3-0.
All four teams moved on to the consolation bracket and had varying levels of success. The bracket for the consolation round has not been made available at this time.
With the completion of the NEWITT, the Pioneers bring an end to their fall season.
