Louisiana's education superintendent John White will kick off his "Louisiana Believes" tour Monday in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes.Watch ReportLouisiana Believes is the state's comprehensive plan to ensure every student is on track to a professional career or a college degree. It is built on the premise that all children can achieve high expectations, and that those closest to them, parents and teachers, know better than government how to help students achieve those expectations.This fall the tour focuses on several major initiatives happening across the state, including Early Childhood Network Pilot, Believe and Prepare, Jump Start and the shift to Common Core.The tour kicks off at 9 a.m. Monday at the Kingsley House in New Orleans with a discussion on the Early Childhood Network Pilot. It is the state's push toward a more united network, expanding access to high quality, publicly funded early childhood programs, and ensuring more children go to kindergarten ready.Then at 10:30 a.m. the superintendent will be at Lawrence D. Crocker College Prep speaking about Believe and Prepare. The program allows the department to provide grants to empower schools and districts to design innovative, classroom- and school-based preparation experiences for aspiring educators.At noon, the tour heads to Greater New Orleans, Inc. for the Jump Start regional team meeting. Jump Start is a program for school districts, colleges, and businesses to collaborate in providing career courses and workplace experiences to high school students, getting them certified for the career fields most likely to lead to high-wage jobs.The tour wraps up at 3:30 p.m. at Grace King High school for the teacher leader meeting. White wants to hear from teachers on ways the Department of Education can best support their work during this transition to higher expectations and more challenging assessments.
