WARTENBERGER APPOINTED SOUTHEAST REGION REP FOR CROSS COUNTRY

PHOENIX – During the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Convention this week, Radford cross country coach Mackenzie Wartenberger was selected as the women's cross country southeast regional representative to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Executive Committee.

In this role, Wartenberger will be involved in ranking teams for the southeast region and voicing concerns from the region to the executive committee.

"I am honored and excited to represent Radford University and our program as the new women's cross country representative for the southeast region," Wartenberger expressed. "We have traditionally been one of the strongest and most competitive regions at the NCAA Division I level. I look forward to representing that strength, and our interests on the national level."

Speaking of strengths, Wartenberger obviously knows a thing or two about coaching. In just two years, the former California standout has revitalized Radford's cross country program.

This past fall, the Highlanders recorded monumental performances at the Big South cross country championships. The women placed third (their highest finish since 1990) while the men captured fourth (their top performance since 2007). On the women's side, Radford had two all-conference runners in the meet for the first time since 2000.

"Obviously, we are very happy for Mackenzie and her appointment," director of track and field/cross country Brent Chumbley said. "It shows her dedication to our sport and her passion to help cross country grow while representing Radford University."

Wartenberger, who replaced Jenny Severns of Murray State, will serve as the southeast regional representative for three years.
