2019 Youth Performance Project
Illinois Art Station, in partnership with Artolution and BCAI, invites 12 local youth interested in performing arts to work alongside Karla Thomas (CJ), an international Latin dancer, actor and comedian in a FREE week long dance and theater workshop. The workshop will give local youth an opportunity to create a piece to tell their stories.No experience Needed!  

The final piece will be performed on Sunday, June 9 during the youth mural reveal at the intersection of Market Street ad Morris Avenue in Bloomington.

Youth will meet each day, Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at BCAI School of art in the Creativity Center (107 E Chestnut St #100 Bloomington, IL 61701) to practice.

Youth are required to attend an orientation on Friday, May 31 and engage in a dialogue on community, discuss ideas, and meet peers prior to working on the performance.

This project is FREE and youth will be selected based on commitment and interest levels.

The deadline for receipt of student applications is May 20, 2019.

o   Day 1: Friday, May 31 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Youth Workshop + Orientation at Illinois State University
o   Day 2: Monday, June 3: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Practice
o   Day 3: Tuesday, June 4: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Practice
o   Day 4: Wednesday, June 5: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Practice
o   Day 5: Thursday, June 6: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Practice
o   Day 6: Friday, June 7: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Practice
o   Day 7: Sunday, June 9: 12 p.m. - 2 pm. Performance during Community Mural Reveal

About the Artist: Karla-Jayne Thomas, also known as CJ and Karlinha do Tamborim, is a Jamaican-English artist and educator in the areas of dance, improv comedy, theatre, percussion, singing and creative writing. She has a talent for combining the arts with her passion for teaching young people. Karla specializes in samba dancing and is a prominent member of the London School of Samba and Samba New York, both of which crowned her Queen of the Drums, the highest honor for a samba dancer.
