Dark Shadows Exhibition

Once again we welcome back Kieran Tuohy’s “Dark Shadows” Exhibition with new additions to the display.

Each piece, carved in the medium of bog oak immortalizes the stories of our famine ancestors. From ‘The Line for Soup’ to the ‘Gates of the Poorhouse’, the story of the workhouse and the history of the famine emanates from each face, hand and bone. The image here 'Intimidation and shame' is one of this year's new additions.

Abandoning the normal bogwood sculpturing techniques of bringing out the natural forms in the wood into apparent objects, Kieran unearths his own images from the wood. He is unique in that he creates his own shapes and uses many subtly different textures to achieve the finish he wants, using the natural flaws in the wood to great effect. You can learn more about Kieran and his work at: www.kierantuohy.com.

Certificate in Local History

We are delighted to announce that this year the Irish Workhouse Centre will again host the Certificate in Local History in conjunction with the University of Limerick (numbers permitting).Interest in local history has never been greater. This course has been designed in the University of Limerick as a practical support for such activity. It is for one-year and is a part-time evening course at certificate level.

The programme is designed to provide a supportive and stimulating context for reading and research in local history. It offers a qualification to individuals who are already active in the area, an opportunity to those who are interested in historical research for their own personal development and a possible path to further study.

For further information please contact Rachael at the Workhouse info@irishworkhousecentre.ie or (090) 975 9200. Further information on the course from the University of Limerick here.
Heritage Week 2023

This year's Heritage Week will take place from 12th-20th August. National Heritage Week celebrates Ireland's cultural, built and natural heritage. This year's theme invites you to explore Living Heritage, the traditions and practices, knowledge and skills passed down through generations.

We're currently putting together the final touches to our Heritage Week event guide. Keep an eye on our social media accounts and www.heritageweek.ie for full details nearer the time! We are grateful to the #HeritageCouncil for their continued support.

New Projects in the works.....
