Video: Former NFL star shares how football experience shapes his restaurant business

John Offerdahl, former Miami Dolphins linebacker and owner of Offerdahl’s Café Grill, discusses how the lessons he learned from playing in the NFL helps him run his business.

John Offerdahl, the former Miami Dolphins linebacker, grew up with four sisters, a domineering mother, a passive father, and a poster above his bed that helped shaped who he is today.

"In the game of life as in football, the principle to follow is this:

Hit the line hard.
Don't foul.
Don't shirk.
Hit the line hard."

That slogan can also be applied to running a business, said the owner of a chain of restaurants named after him, Offerdahl’s Café Grill. He gave a 15-minute presentation during October's Fast Casual Executive Summit in Miamiabout translating what he learned from playing football to running his business.

"Hit the line hard," stands for having passion, he said, and just like a football player shirks and fouls, business people often shirk responsibilities, which leads to failure.

Watch the video to learn about his time playing under Don Shula and how he used what he learned on the field to run a successful restaurant.

Editor's note: Offerdahl gave one of four 15-minute discussions that will be featured on FastCasual.com over the next two Fridays. Watch the other installments here.
