What do you see?
What do you see?
We see a boy and his preschool friend.
We see unicorn horns, a cool shirt and bib and a pretty party skirt.
But look a little closer...
See the arms; touching?
See the slight lean of this little girl... towards Dexter? She is actually leaning in, comfortable and happy. See how comfortable she is with his wheelchair? It's like she doesn't even see it. She doesn't care about it.
That's what we see.
This photo doesn't show it, but this little girl spent the start of her party making Dexter's unicorn horn. She had friends and family there, music was playing and party food was out... And, she spent time, making sure Dexter had the coolest unicorn horn. She asked him about colours, and chose the ones we have been told he always chooses at school. We decided to put it on his chair, instead of his head.
This photo doesn't show it, but this little girl skipped past Dexter, on occasion, at her party... and ran her fingers through his hair... Just to show she was there.
I can't remember whether she kissed his cheek... but, at one stage, she got some of Dexter's saliva on her. And she didn't care. She didn't make a fuss. She didn't embarrass Dexter.
This photo doesn't show that.
Dexter has a communication book at preschool, because he can't tell us about his days.
This little girl has featured in that book, for a very long time.
Consistently.
She is Dexter's friend.
This photo doesn't show the hope and excitement this little girl brings us.
With Dexter, it is scary. Many people are afraid to include him... perhaps because they are afraid to do something wrong. Some people think he can't do anything, so he wouldn't want to go to a party.
We've been a bit worried about how well Dexter would 'fit in'... We wondered whether he would get any party invitations. We hoped he might get a couple.
We shouldn't have worried. This cheeky little boy has been to a few parties now...
And, the kids all say hi.
And, Dexter dances to the music and joins in with the pass the parcel and piñata games. (He needs a little help, but he joins in.)
This photo doesn't show the hope and excitement this little girl brings us.
If Dexter is lucky enough to make real friendships with caring, happy and adventurous people, he will always be happy.
This photo shows us that Dexter is loved, for the little boy he is.
As the adults in Dexter's world, we are a little in love with this girl, too.
(Dexter has great taste!)
We are so thankful to have met such an amazing young girl, who sees the best in Dexter. She talks with him, gets frustrated at him, listens to him, plays with him, sits with him and watches out for him.
She makes our hearts sing.
Thank you, Beautiful.
You make a lovely unicorn.
