Interviewer: Once someone is going through their second or third DUI, what are some of the misconceptions that they may have?
Do Not Underestimate the Severity of Penalties for Multiple DUI Convictions
Brian: Once they have hit their second or their third, if they think it is going to be like the first as far as jail time, as far as fines and fees, as far as counseling, they’re in for a shock. The sentencing ranges usually are going to be much greater the second time and the third time around.
I don’t think people go into this oblivious, especially if it’s by the time that they have their second or their third one. They know that punishment is coming. They know that they are very likely going to have to face reality and deal with the consequences to their life for allegedly doing this again.
Are Men More Likely than Women to Face DUI Charges?
Interviewer: In repeat DUI cases, are there more men than women offenders?
There Is a Rise in the Number of Women Charged with DUI
Brian: I think generally in the system there are more men that deal with alcohol DUIs. There seem to be more women that deal with prescription medication DUIs. Over the last five years or so, I have definitely seen more women in the system than there used to be.
DUI offenders still tend to be predominantly be male but things are changing, especially with the number of prescription medication cases that are coming along. It can really happen to anyone. Unfortunately, when we’re talking about alcohol, women just because of their size tend to be able to have higher blood alcohol levels quicker than men. It only takes a few beers to get to a rather high blood alcohol level, whereas men it might take a little bit more.
