‘Street Heroines’ Profiles Female Graffiti Artists Around the World

"A documentary that looks at the courage and creativity of female graffiti and street artists from around the world."
Indiewire's Project of the Day: 'Street Heroines'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Street Heroines

Logline: “Street Heroines” is a documentary that looks at the courage and creativity of female graffiti and street artists from around the world.

Elevator Pitch:

Graffiti and street art has long been a male-dominated subculture. With such little recognition gained over the years it’s not surprising that few people know women have been part of the movement since the beginning. However, with more and more women leaving their mark on the movement today, “Street Heroines” pays long overdue tribute to their contributions and reflects a global shift in perspective of who we are as a society.

Production Team:

Director/Producer/Cinematographer: Alexandra Henry
Producer: Jordan Hawkes
Editor: Simone Cassas
Post Production: Post Factory NYC

About the Film:

In 2012, I came across two women spray painting a wall in New York City. During all the years I’ve traveled and lived around the world documenting graffiti and street art through photography, it never crossed my mind that women were actively part of the movement. That day my entire perspective on the urban environment changed. Like most people, I had always assumed that graffiti and street art was a man’s world. Three and half years, 10 countries and 25 artists later, I’ve set out to bring more awareness to what women are bringing to the public space.

Current Status: We are currently fundraising via Kickstarter to finish production and move into post.
