Regional and long-distant trains cancelled.

A 24-hour strike by railway workers will bring trains to a standstill on the Trenitalia and Italo national networks and the Milan-based Trenord regional services from 21.00 on Thursday 23 June to the same time on Friday 24 June.

As required by law, the commuter rush-hours 06.00 to 09.00 and 18.00 to 21.00 will see an emergency “minimum service” running, to allow travellers to reach their workplace and return home, albeit with probable delays and overcrowding.

In particular, the Malpensa Express service by Trenord will be operated by coaches between the airport and Milan’s Cadorna station. Travellers will need to bear in mind that the road service takes longer than the Express, and that it also does not run from Milan Centrale as the rail service does.

For long-distance travel, the Trenitalia website carries a list of guaranteed connections during the strike. The Lazio, Calabria and Sicily regions will not be affected.

Workers are protesting the long-awaited renewal of their sector contract, as well as overwork caused by a halt to new hiring in the sector.
