MIDLAND CITY, AL (WSFA) - A 12-year-old boy and a pregnant woman who came to his rescue are recovering from a dog attack in Midland City.

Police say the boy was attacked by his mother's dogs. The attack started inside his mother's house on Gary Street, and he was dragged outside into the backyard. The boy was home with his younger sister at the time

Police say the children live in Texas with their father, and they were visiting.

Bailey Buchanan and her sister-in-law, McKayla Burgans, who live nearby, heard screaming and went to see what was going on.

When they got to the house, Buchanan said she saw the dogs attacking the boy and jumped out of the car to help.

"I saw him, and the dog was going for his neck, and I said 'McKayla he's going to die.' Then I got out of the car," Buchanan said.

She began making noise to distract the dogs, and the male dog charged at her. She was bit on her leg and hand.

Burgans was able to help the boy in the car while Buchanan distracted the dogs.

"I'm very thankful that everybody left there with their lives...I'm thankful that Bailey didn't get really hurt, and I'm thankful we got him into a place where he could hide from the dogs at that point," Burgans said, adding that she hasn't been able to eat or sleep since the attack.

Midland City Police Chief Keith Walker said it was a bloody scene when they arrived.

"These dogs were just like wild animals," Walker said.

The boy suffered multiple injuries and was transported to Children's of Alabama hospital in Birmingham.

Buchanan and her unborn child are expected to be okay. She hopes to go see the boy when she heals and is able to walk again. His mom texted Buchanan and told her that he was asking about her. He wanted to know how she was doing.

Two of the dogs involved have been put down. A third dog is expected to be put down when the mother returns from the hospital.
