THE 13TH INTERNATIONAL CORAL REEF SYMPOSIUM (ICRS)

The ICRS is sanctioned by the International Society for Reef Studies (ISRS) and held every four years. It is the primary international meeting focused on coral reef science and management. The Symposium will bring together an anticipated 2,500 coral reef scientists, policy makers and managers from 70 different nations in a forum to present the latest research findings, case histories and management activities, and to discuss the application of scientific knowledge to achieving coral reef sustainability.

Vicki Nichols Goldstein, COCO CEO, will be presenting a poster at the Coral Reef symposium on
Blue the Dive (BTD). She will be addressing how the SCUBA diving industry can be more sustainable, focusing on harmful sunscreen ingredients and their impact on rivers and reefs, and how divers can be a force for conservation.

Have you seen what some of our Ocean Ambassadors are up to?

If you haven't already, be sure to check out Kara's Reusable Produce Bags that are handmade and plastic-free!  She sells them individually or as a whole kit for your next grocery trip. 20% of the profits from these bags will be donated to the Colorado Ocean Coalition, a non profit established to spread ocean awareness to an inland community.

It's summer and Emily the Mermaid has been spotted around town!  She is a professional mermaid who fuses entertainment and education as a means to inspire inland communities to think critically about their impacts on our oceans. Book her for your next event or birthday!

A huge thank you to Lucky's Market for hosting our World Ocean's day celebration on June 8th. It was a beautiful day and we were able to raise some money for the Inland Ocean Movement!  We would also like to thank Goddess Garden Organics for donating the water-friendly sunscreen samples and bottles for those who traded out their chemical ones.

Thank you to
Emily Mermaid for taking pictures with those who participated and donated to the event. Together we were able to spread awareness and garner support for the Colorado Ocean Coalition.

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium invited the Utah Ocean Coalition to celebrate World Oceans Day. Together we taught visitors about plastics, micro beads and the debris dilemma. The aquarium recently expanded and moved into a gorgeous facility. It is artistically inspired and has a conservation commitment. It is a fantastic place to learn about our oceans. The UOC brought a dozen members and took many World Oceans Day pledges!

COCO is actively establishing inland ocean chapters around the country, and in Canada.  Check out our Chapter web site if you would like to start a chapter where you live.

We are gearing up for another beautiful summer in Northern Michigan. The Great Lakes Ocean Coalition is planning a Microbead Mailback Drive the first week in August where
we will collect products with polyethylene/polypropylne and remove them from entering the Great Lakes. And then join us the following week when we visit Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the first National Marine Sanctuary on the Great Lakes, where we will view shipwrecks on a glass bottom boat and learn how our National Marine Sanctuaries are working to preserve our Great Lakes and Oceans.

The Great Lakes Ocean Coalition, in its continued efforts to advocate for the largest surface area of freshwater in the world, has added its support to the work of Oil & Water Don't Mix calling for a shutdown of oil in Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. Currently, the Canadian pipeline company Enbridge pumps almost 23 million gallons of oil every day through its Line 5 pipeline from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario. You can learn more and take action at Oil & Water Don't Mix.

On June 9th 2016, Vicki Goldstein, CEO of the Colorado Ocean Coalition, spoke to water-minded professionals about how our actions affect the quality of water here and all the way down to our oceans. She focused on emerging topics such as micro plastics and chemical sunscreens in our water systems and their effects on humans and wildlife.
