Please Welcome the Class of 2018

The school year may have wrapped up, but at CDI we are just beginning work with the Class of 2018! Over the course of the winter and early spring, CDI conducted information sessions at our partner high schools and received a record-breaking 154 applications. Counselors then spent hours on individual interviews with over 80 eligible students. Ultimately, a class of 45 Scholars was chosen, an all-time high for CDI.

The Class of 2018 includes students from diverse countries of origin, ranging from China to Ghana to Nepal. It also includes three siblings and one cousin of older CDI Scholars, continuing our tradition of being a truly family-oriented organization. The 2018ers have already begun working hard, attending orientation on June 13th, a workshop on June 22nd, and adding college visits to their calendars. We can't wait to see the great things they do over the next six years!

Because I Said I Would

We make a promise to help our students find their best-fit college and to stay with them until they graduate. This year, we asked our new Scholars and their parents to each make a promise to us, as well. We asked that they write out a "promise card" with an action that would help them or their student graduate from college.

The promise cards are a part of Because I said I would, a social movement and nonprofit dedicated to "bettering humanity through the power of a promise." Participants are asked to handwrite a pledge and then give the card to someone who will hold them accountable. Since its inception in 2012, Because I said I would has distributed over four million promise cards in 153 countries.

As the Class of 2018 starts their work with us, we thought this would be a great way to keep our Scholars on the right track. Each student pledged to make one change - such as raising their GPA, studying more, or ending procrastination - that would help them on their path to college. CDI is holding on to the promise cards and will help make sure these goals become a reality.

Seeking Interviewers

CDI is seeking professionals to serve as interviewers for our mock interview workshop on Saturday, July 23rd. Hosted in our Bethesda office, there will be breakfast and an orientation from 10 to 10:30, followed by three rounds of 20-minute interviews. Questions will be provided to interviewers in advance.

This is a great opportunity to get to meet our students and help them get comfortable talking about their résumés with new people.  This will be especially important for the Class of 2017, who will be interviewing with colleges in the fall.

If you are interested, please let us know by Friday, July 8th.
